Fenton Headers for 303/324 - Please Explain
Can someone explain this selling price to me?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Oldsmobile-303-324-Fenton-headers-1949-1950-1951-1952-1953-1954-1955-1956-scta-/120872293158
$1525.00 for a used pair of "vintage" (the "vintage" is sarcastic) headers? I could have 7 sets made for this price, no? What gives?

Well they are cast iron and vintage spped equipment. This has a big draw for the street rodders with open engine compartments. I would guess they are rare items as well since they are for an Olds. That is a lot of $$ but seems there were many who were interested and would pay the price. They were on someone's "must have" list.

These things have to be very rare. I remember Fenton being popular for the old Cevy Stovbolt 6's. Man those things sounded cool with a set of Smitty's. My brother had them on a 54 Chevy.

I asked the same question yesterday when they were up to 910.00 .I have been looking for a pair for a couple years and that is the first ones ive seen,i guess custom made is the way i will go if i decide to i cannot see to pay that much for them.I was told they are nice for the open front end cars like t-buckets etc. with a set of lake pipes attached.

If you can have 7 sets of cast headers made for 1525.00 Ill take them all
While 1500 is on the stiff side 800-1000 is not uncommon
these where only made for a couple years in the early to mid 50's and origanally fit the 49-53 motors
Someone opened the ports up on these ones for sale to fit later heads

Resurrecting this thread...I was looking into the possibility of putting Headers on my 303, I keep seeing header flanges on the web for the 303, are these required to enable you to add headers or is they for something else?
Cheers.

If I understand it correctly the flange is where you start (the base that everything else is welded to) when building custom headers. To make headers look correct it takes a good pipe bending machine and a very talented person to do the bending.... Tedd

None made in the last 50 years or so.....This could possibly be a venture Olds Dad might want to get into.... Just a thought Gordon if you are looking for a unique Old's piece that would sell and if engineered correctly should make a decent profit.... Tedd

Another pair of NOS Fenton Headers on Ebay....
Just wondering how you get the exhaust to bolt up on the PS when the flange runs straight out toward the firewall, the DS even worse when the steering and power brakes are all in the way.

I don't think these were originally intended fit in the 88 or 98. I think the headers for the 303/324 were for the engines fitted into hot rods or custom builds.
I think the drivers side may have issues clearing the steering set up too.

The are a exact fit for 1949, 50 and 51 88A Oldsmobile cars, using the down pipes that came in the kit. Lots of sets installed and seen at shows. They have the 52-53 style passengers side manifold generator mount however. One guy locally stood at the grinder and ground his off on a NOS set for use and a clean look in a '50 88. They do fit on 1952 88-98 as I have test fit mine but the down pipes must be custom. Factory column standard shift likely not but floor shift - yes. Factory power steering could work but factory under floor power brakes - no. People use them with 324's or 324 heads on 303's using small adapter plates - can't comment on vehicle fitment after '53.

To be honest if I wanted a set of headers for my 56 I would buy these and a selection of small short pipe bends and tack weld it all together on the car then take it off and finish welding it on the bench. The flanges are available for the 303 too. If you don't want to weld it yourself but don't want to spend a fortune paying someone else to do then do the tack welding part yourself then take them to a shop to have them finished. Remember to add a bracket for the generator
