1956 Engine Oil Filter Housing Question
I didn't like the finish on the filter housing so I stripped the paint and found that the housing was rather rusty under the paint. After cleaning it up and sanding off the surface rust I treated it with Loctite Extend Rust Neutralizer. Next will be a couple coats of sandable primer and a light sanding to make it perfectly smooth.
My question is, what is the correct color for the housing?

Wally, I have to chuckle at this just a little bit. You are to be admired for the efforts you are putting into refinishing this housing since it is near impossible to see from the topside of the engine. In answer to your question, it should be painted the same green as the engine. When I had my 54, I put an oil filter housing from a 63 394 on the 324 so I could use a spin on filter and not have to screw with that old cartridge filter in the housing. While not original, it is a huge improvement.

redoldsman, I was just thinking back to Basic Training, before I went to Vietnam also. Someone made a comment when I was building a model airplane and I asked what the proper color scheme should be for the fighter I was building. I haven't changed I still want things to be correct.
The housing was painted red but I'm certain someone repainted it but not necessarily the correct color.

Mine is a '55. Like others, I took the housing off for a spin on adapter. I don't know if the '55 and '56 colors were the same. Red or Tedd may have better info.
But, I still have the housing, and it was a blood red. If you know anything about colors, close to what I would call "Fokker red." Meaning Red Barron red. If you want a picture, post here and I can reply and post one. Mine is chipped, but lots of the original color survives and has not been painted.
