slim jim replacement

I have a 63 98 with a 394 and slim jim trans. I have always been unhappy with the trans. I am going to do the trans adapter and a TH350 or a 700R4. I am leaning towards the 700R4. Has anyone done this swap? Does anyone have any comments of suggestions?

Gene,
I just did a swap in my 62. But I went with a 200-4R because it was a smaller compact design. But the stock 200-R4 probly can't handle the weight of the car. Mine is GearStar built (beyond stock for over 300+hp) with a Bendtsen's Trans Adapter. It all bolted together smooth. I then had to cut my transmission tunnel out to get it in the car. I did a standard cross member on the transmission and for my motormount I uses the stock crossmember (Shimmed down) and made new mounts with standard GM trans mounts and some well crafted angle iron. Those were attached to two bolts that went through the adapter and into the block. I haven't got a drive shaft in it yet. But I can't to see how many MPG I through down.

Here is an older thread on a similar subject. I have a 64 98 with a Slim Jim and it is a piece of junk. I am considering replacing the engine and transmission. Natas, about how much did it run you to replace the tranny?

Alot, but it is a performance transmission. Junk yard trans can be had for cheap.
