TEAR DROP VALVE GUIDES
am grinding the egr bumps and would like to know about tear drop the guides. towards the intake or exhaust ? am opening the roof of the chambers and smoothing the bottom to blend it all in . is there a pictoral of this as to how its all done. thanks ...jim

The teardrop needs to be consistent with airflow direction. By the way, they are A.I.R. bumps. The E.G.R. is totally confined to the intake manifold.

While there are certainly guidelines, the reality is that without a flow bench, you stand as much of a chance of making flow worse as in making it better. You cannot "eyeball" subsonic flow, as the way the air responds is not always obvious. As an example, the exhaust ports in the Edelbrock heads are smaller than stock, but the flow is improved due to a straighter shot.

You certainly won't hurt anything by removing the A.I.R. bumps. Minor cleanup and casting flash removal is also a good thing. Beyond that, it starts to get dicey.

We were discussing this at the shop a bit back and the owner states that in his opinion, there are very little gains to be made there anyway, and that by far your best gains on a street car especially will be at the valves. In other words, invest in a good quality valve job with perhaps a larger intake valve and a little bowl work and it will be money well spent.

cleaning around the pocket is the beat way to gain. The area from the seat to the guide is where to work. You can see the extra material and rough area to the guide should be smoothed out and blend to the guide. Both exhaust and intake. Remove the "A.I.R." bump and smooth the roof back to the guide. I would not do anyrthing to the floor area.
