Rebuilt Q-Jet installed and engine wont start

I installed a rebuilt Q-Jet on my 69 Cutlass and the engine will not start now. When I first installed it and tried to start the engine it sounded like it wanted to start and then it would just bog down. Now it just continues to turn over. I checked for spark and also installed a new HEI ignition coil.

The Q-Jet was purchased from guaranteed carbs in florida. I spoke with a gentleman who ran through a few things with me but came to the conclusion that it was not the carb. He had me check to see if gas was being pumped when I moved the throttle (which it is). I am stumped. Any help would be great.

Did you install a new HEI distributor or just change the coil in the one you have. All engines need to run are air, fuel, and spark at the right time. Apparently you have air and fuel. I'd look at the spark.

timing @ distributor is off if you actually unbolted it from the motor and replaced the whole assembly, it could be off still if you only did the cap and rotor.......if it's too far advanced or not-advanced then i would think no spark would be produced due to lack of well ......timing. =/

I only replaced the coil. I checked for spark using the plug against the intake and cranking. It produced a spark.

I haven't heard you say it smell's like gas, like it's flooding so maybe a couple pumps on the gas petal before cranking the engine, is all it needs.

If it starts and stalls, take a screwdriver and give the idle set screw a half turn, if that doesn't help, back it down a half turn to where it was.

if the idle screw is set too lean it wont stay running unless you hold the throttle..
