matching numbers how can you tell??

i have the motor and transmisson out of my cutlass and i was wondering how do i find out if they are matching numbers to the cutlass i have?

does the same apply for the transmission?

a tag with the vin derivative stamped on it?

Yes. If It's a th350 the vin will be on the case on the driver's side just above the pan lip.
It should read something like 31mXXXXXXXXXXX
If you still have the tag, that's an added bonus.

Well, yours won't necessarily have the letter "M"
M is the letter for the Lansing plant according to Joe. P.

if the tags not there on the transmission the numbers will still be there?

Yes. The number is not on the tag, it's actually stamped into the trans case.
