#5 cylinder head /piston question
I Bought a 1976 Olds 350 that came with #8 heads, got some 1968 #5 heads to replace them with. The question I have is what types of pistons are on each year engine,I know with the heads alone I'm making progress.Anyone out there know of a reasonable source for valve springs for the 1968 #5 heads.

Not hard to do if thought out beforehand. I can get you springs etc or you can go to the usual Jegs, Summit etc. You'll need to know your cam and all other issues before you start buying parts.

I agree, you need to think through the combo first, before you start buying. Valve springs should match the cam, fyi, and static compression is also a concern. I'm guessing the engine is out of the car at the moment? Do you plan on tearing it down?

Engine is low mileage, checked everything out,in good shape.Iknow what it takes to get it to 300 hp.The engine is solid I don't think I'll need to much[new gaskets timing chain etc.] to handle minor up grades just looking to see if anyone knows better places to check for parts.Thats all the power I want for nice weather daily driving not interested in getting heavy duty trans or replaceing the light duty rear end.I live just outside Pittsburgh [lots of hills] just like a little punch out of the car and not to be crawling by the time I get to the top of a hill.

Sounds like you're ahead of the game then!
For something like that, I think the Comp 42-221-4 or 42-222-4 would be good choices. Have the heads checked/done, do stainless one-piece, and replace the springs, etc to match. My preference would certainly be to go adjustable valve train.
You could take all the guess work out by calling a Olds builder, like OPP, can guide you so you're sure you get it all right. Some of the 'kits' have useless parts in them and you can end up with leftover parts.
