converter question / opinion
well money is a bit tight in my camp yet again this year. I cant have a custom converter made like i wanted to but what i do have is a roughly 2800 stall and a 3000 stall. I have a few questions the 3000 stall was behind a 455 i forgot if runing it behind a small block will change the rpm in which the converter flashes to a higher point or lower. Also im running a howards 512/ 512 lift cam with 227/33 duration @ .050 in my new 355 . Which converter out of the 2 should i run. the 2800 is an el cheapo from ebay that actually flashes closer to 3k i'ts hard to really read the tach while im punching it but it did improve my launch big time from the butt dyno no track time engine crapped out last year. the 3000 stall i never ran before and never drove it enough but it did live behind an 11 sec car so it's probably better than the flea bay unit. i also currently have a 2300 stall converter behind the 307 thats in there for now but i think that might kill the 60ft. times . I might be able to send out the el cheapo unit to get re worked and still be money ahead but i figured id get some input from you guys .

I know what i need but what i need and can afford are two diffrent things lol. just trying to see which one of the converters i have will be my best choice for my new set up.

You did not mention gear ratio. Also, the amount of torque an engine makes will have an effect on stall speed; more torque = higher stall. Personally, I would go with the race-proven 3000. Use a good external cooler. IMHO.

gear ratio is 3.73 . i got a price from midwest converters on an 11 inch unit that will stall around 2500 the show special is 300 for the race and performance expo. trust me it's hard for me to part with 300 bucks with no testing done yet with any other converter at the track. I think im going to stick with the el cheapo converter in my current th400 which might be on the fritz . But i do have the th400 that came from that 11 sec car to match the converter. So i guess if the numbers arent there with the el chepo unit and old th400 trans that has alot of very hard miles on it i"ll swap in the th400. My labor is cheaper than buying a converter im still unsure works i guess. It really is a tough call becasue i would love to buy what i need but as always spending money is the hard part when i know it could help down the road. the thing is i need a good launch i might get one of the converters i have re worked down the road. Im really undecided at the moment im going to have to sleep on it tommorow is the last day of the expo .

Ok im re earthing this . So i did some more info searches on converter choice info. So from what i read i should go 500 rpm higher than where the cam starts building power. So the cam i chose starts building power at 2400 rpm so going with a 3000 stall would be right about where i should be. Any thoughts on this. If this is the case then i'll run the 3000 stall that was race proven behind th bbo . I intend to run it on a th350 instead of a th400.

Yeah but now i know why the 3000 stall is pretty much the way to go. I always like to double and triple check any advice i get i also just like to get more knowledge on anything. I just wanted to know if the info i read was correct which explains why you said to run the 3000 stall.
