70 Olds 98 Heater Core R&R - Royal Pain!!!

Well, when I bought my Olds I realized it needed a heater core during the maiden cruise home. Smoke was pouring out of the vents when in heater mode. I got the part for $38 bucks and just got around to doing the work.

I am fairly mechanically inclined so I did not consult and repair manual. What I found is that this car was not build with any regard to the unfortunate technician that would have to r&r the heater core!

For the most part the disassembly went well with one exception! Three bastard screws at the top side of the heater evaportor blower assembly where a b*tch to remove!!!

After a few choice four letter words and extra effort I managed to gt em out.

At least you got the heater core out. It is a pain in the butt. I had to do one on my 1964 98.

I don't know what they were thinking.It's like they designed the cars around the heater cores. So many cars were the same way, at least with GM.I know the F bodies wee terrible.Not sure about Ford and Chrysler. I have to do the core in my work van. (84 Chev G20) I think I'm gonna take a short cut method rather than remove the whole dash etc. Of course,you can't do that with your classic.

Don't cut anything I changed out Chevy van heater core about 17 years ago I don't remember everything about it but I do remember it wasn't as bad as it looked.
Take your time and do right. The dash doesn't need to come out.

It could be worse...
On my old ford, the heater core (and box) must be removed from inside the car just to replace the heater hoses! Clamps are on the inside.

Needless to say the original hoses are still there, and a homemade bypass kit is in the trunk, should a hose finally fail...

Looks like you are making good progress though!

Well I managed to finish the installation this Saturday but did not bother to take too many pictures (Got a couple if any one wants to see). It went together much easier then it came apart! I did however perform a silent recall on the three basted screws at the top!

Now, today the damn starter took a dump

if it's not one thing it's another. I still love my Land Yacht
