New guy - 56 olds 88 4d

Hello from Costa Mesa, CA. Will be asking questions about my first olds 88. This was a lucky CL find from NV. Looks to be 98% original. Odometer shows 37k and judging by the condition of the car- could be original. Nothing messed with on this car! Not even clipped wire. She has PS PB and give only thing that doesn't work is the vacuum drive wipers. Will be replacing vac lines next, then onto window rubber rotten seat cloth, and headliner.

Welcome. Very nice car. It seems the number of us with vintage 50's cars keep growing. I just replaced the vacuum wipers on my 54 with electric. New Port Engineering make a bold in replacement and the cost is $219. I got mine off ebay from Yogi's and it included free shipping. You can use your original **** so it looks 100% original. These are great cars and I hope you enjoy yours.

Welcome, good to have another 50's Old's in the group and that is one nice looking 4 door! When you get a chance drop on down to the vintage forum where many of the 50's and older guys and girls hang out.I will also second that New Port wiper motor swap best thing that happened to my ride in a long time.... Lost in the fifties ... Tedd

Welcome! Thanks for posting the pictures. Your car sent me on a trip down memory lane. With the exception of a padded dash, it is identical to the car that my parents had when I got my license as a 16 year old. I now own the Super 88 in my avatar. I, also, needed to reupholster my seats and was able to get exact fabric from SMS in Oregon. You've got a very nice car. Happy Oldsmobiling!

Welcome! I have a tear in my eye! Another 56 four door sedan.

As Glenn mentioned above, you should consider converting to electric wipers after you beat your head against a wall trying to get those vacuum wipers to work.

Lastly, that color combo is not original, but you probably know that, and it looks great.

Really a nice car you have there. Makes me even more sad that I missed out on the 56 4 door sedan I was looking at last month.

Welcome from another mid 50's Olds fan. You will be able to do wonders with the surface rust showing on the bumper chrome with Brillo pads and a lot of energy.Exceptional looking
car to be over 60 years old. Glad you posted pictures. Larry

I'll correct myself before someone else does! That paint combo could be original. On two tones, the roof and the "upper body" were usually the same color but you could get a "roof only" two tone.

The 88 that my parents had was the exact paint scheme with the gray bottom and the white top as well as the same upholstery. Since it was a used car at time of purchase, I'm not certain whether it was factory or if the white was added later.

The car in this post is a 4 door sedan Standard 88,and many of them were two toned with only the top a different color. Larry

Larry, you're right again! It looks like the Standard 88's were as you described and the Super 88's were what I was thinking of.

Nice looking Olds and welcome aboard. I recently bought my 56 Olds 88 and joined the site about a month and half ago. I must say the guys here are great assets for knowledge and advice when it comes to these great cars.

While I'm thinking about it, we always tell new members to get a Shop Manual. Don't get the CD version. Get a real manual. You will thank us.

Glad you thought of that Frank. That is the best money anybody will ever spend on their car. There are lots of them on ebay so don't buy the first one you see.
