$600 barn find in Haslett Michigan turns out to be the missing #1 pace car from the 1970 Indianapolis 500 race. She won 2nd place at 2011 Detroit Autorama in Restored Convertibles class. She was invited and is confirmed to be at the Muscle Cars at the Mansion on October 15, 2011; Beverly Hills Playboy Mansion party. Hopefully SEMA then maybe onto the Unser Racing Museum! Sweet car!!

There was a nice story in JWO about it. Here's some more info too:

I'm pretty sure there's another post about it here on Classicolds but I can't find it.
The thing that tipped the guy off that is was something special were the grab bars inside the rear windows

Memories..The GM Heritage Center and Mr. Unser now have the information about me. Hoping we can raise a lot of money for cancer research.

Muscle cars at the mansion is not really a car show. It is a stripper party with cars as the backdrop. If you have not reviewed the pictures you should do that. As long as you don't mind drunk people around your car you will be ok. I dropped a car off last year but didn't stay.

Yes I know it's not a car show..it's a party. This is why one of us will probably be hanging out near the car most of the night while the car owner has a little fun. Me! I am looking fwd to Cali and hopefully get to see Jay's Garage while out there. I don't mind. The car is going to the W. coast so may as well get a party in at the same time! The show we want to get into is the Concours D'Elegance of America. I work with one of the guys who is on one of the selection committee's for Meadow Brook. Miss Indy PaceCar is also invited to the Henry Ford Motor Muster. Hoping to see some Olds fans there too.

I agree, literally the one of the best, if not the best, Olds finds. Anyone have anything better I'd love to hear it as I've seen some good ones since joining the site.

It does happen to guys or gals like you..Jeff is a guy like you. He's just a great guy. His goal is to do something positive with the car because it could happen to anyone..he said this story is about hope.

Does this particular car have F heads?
I would think exoldsemployee could answer this as I think he's the one that's referenced in the article

There was an article written in JWO about the 1970 Pace Cars about 20 years ago by Mike Furman.
In this article it was mentioned that the two actual Pace Cars were specially prepared using some W performance equipment but they were not W30 cars. They started life as assembly line 442s.
There was also information in this article about the whereabouts of the #1 and #2 Pace Cars
#1) This car was said to be "in an eccentric's garage in Lansing somewhere just rotting away". This coincides with the current owners story of how he came to eventually buy it.
#2) This car was said to have fallen off a trailer while being transported and ended up in a junk yard afterwards. At least part of this may not be true as it appears that the #2 Pace car has also recently surfaced. The current owner, Ron Adams, also of Michigan, had written a story about how he came to own this car and discovered that it was in fact, the #2 Pace Car. I don't recall exactly when this was, but I do recall the story in JWO. It seems like this was in the past 10 years and I know I still have the JWO...now I guess I'll have to go find it.
What I find incredibly fascinating about this, is that BOTH the #1 and #2 cars were said to have fallen off a trailer during transport?!? And keep in mind that the story of the #2 car falling off the trailer was written 20 years ago! And the #1 car fell off it's trailer in the past 5 years! Did this really happen? Did they both really fall off trailers?!? What are the astronomical odds of that happening? And they both survived and are now both restored.
It now seems almost obvious that these two cars and two owners should get together to share and compare notes and for the awesome photo op that would present. And given that the annual Olds Homecoming show, which is about the biggest Olds show in the country short of the Nationals, is also in Michigan, seems like this is not a far fetched idea, right??

I have repeatedly have heard what Kevin says about both cars, and yes I heard #2 fell off years ago but has resurfaced in MI. And yes I sure wish I saw the car, took many a back roads in Lansing while my son went to MS, but never saw anything worth going after. Jeff found the car at an estate sale and from what I hear from more than one person - he is just a regular great guy. From reading the recent articles I believe that and its nice he is having it be shown instead of hording it in his garage for no one to see.

@ Diego..I will have to ask Jeff about the Camaro..since i dont think he owns one right now..but he may have in the past. I will be in Interlochen in May for a little gathering. I think it will start in his garage. I will get pics. The gathering will end up at his house.if we can get the guys OUT of the garage!! LOL..

Jeff didn't find his pace car until 2005 in Haslett MI at an estate auction. He said the #2 pace car is owned by a guy from Lansing. He may be the one you are thinking of. I will ask Jeff about it next time I talk to him. I will also get some pics of his current cars and garage. He just bought Cutlass to drag race. I will interview him and take some new pics soon.
