Steering box

When I took my front end apart and the steering box off there was a shim on each bottom bolt between the box and frame. I am putting it back together and someone told me the shims were not supposed to be there. It that correct?

I've never heard of shims located between the frame and steering box. Not sure why they would have been in there in the first place but you never know who worked on your car before you.

Does it show signs of any frame damage for it's past?

I haven't noticed any frame damage. I took measurements and it seemed to be correct. The shims look like they have been there for a long time. It was one shim on the two bottom bolts. The same size shim. Looks like an alignment shim.

I see no harm in putting them back in as there was a reason at some point in time, I would assume. The only reason they would be in there would have been some sort of a clearance issue or steering wheel position issue. All steering positions are adjustable, so I don't see why though.

I put it bake with out the shims. Everything seems to look like it's lined up correctly. I included some pics.
