Astro Blue W-30 Gets A Little Brother - 1970 W-31 Joins The Family
Hello All,
Hope all my CO friends have survived the nightmare of 2020 well - time to get back to life, liberty, and the pursuit of Oldsmobiles.
I thought there was no more room at the inn for another car until John Bumb listed a broadcast card verified 31 for sale - Astro Blue with Black striping, and black interior. The idea of having a 70 30 and 31 in matching colors proved too much to withstand, so my ever understanding wife green lighted embarking upon another great adventure.
So the facts and condition as I currently understand them to be on my first W-31:
3687 Cutlass Holiday Coupe
96275 indicated miles
Code 25 upper/25 lower body tag
Black Bucket Interior
2nd week June 70 build date
Original block
6 heads
W Intake
Correct Alt
Restamp 255 carb
Big balancer
Replacement tranny
TO 3.91 rear axle
Manual disc brakes
P/S
SS1's
Power Windows (doubt they were originally on the car)
Rear Wing (3 stud - might be original)
Console and correct shifter
Sport Steering Wheel
Overall car presents well. It is an older restoration - undertaken in 1999-2000 by a previous owner in Lansing Michigan. Major items to be taken care of in addition to a general refreshing /detailling of all surfaces are:
1) Rust repair in the trunk lid and LH front fender heel along with rework of previous hood repair.
2) Rebuilding the balancer (will use Damper Doc as per Joe C.)
3) Replacing awful looking front PUI seat covers
4) Getting flat 70 fenders on it
5) Very few fasteners on it are correct
6) Replacing the incorrect late model water pump
7) The biggie - finding a 255 carb. Note - the car runs very strong with the existing one!
In general, the engine/trans/rear axle will only need resealing - operationally the car is excellent. Brakes are good as well. Undercar generally looks very good and suspension /steering are also fine.
It will be sometime till I start on this one. Need to first finish putting my 72 back together to take to the Nationals, and rebuild the engine on my 79 Bronco.
I
I hope some CO members may be familiar with car and can shed some further light on its past. Will follow up with the usual work details as progress takes place.
