How to remove door glass ? How to install the peak moldings and vynil top trim?

A couple questions.

I need help removing the front door glass so I can get the felts off and I'm not sure how. I have the Fisher body !manual but I can't find a diagram of my door or I'm just not seeing it. I believe the 69 442 Sports Coupe (post) is considered an A77 body style. I'm guessing I need to remove the vent window and but can someone help?

When I bought the car the peak molding trim was not on. Also the original vinyl top had been removed before the car was repainted and I need help figuring out how to install the vinyl top trim on the quarter panel. I have a new top and trim but I don't know what fasteners are needed or how to locate the correct spot to install them.

Thanks for the help!

The pictures you posted are of the mounting studs for the upper body molding. Can't see the vinyl top molding area. Did someone fill the holes? The upper body molding is help on with a plastic clip it is put on the studs you pictured and the molding is snapped over it. This is a similar clip that opgi sells for this application. https://www.opgi.com/cutlass/1969/fa...screws/A22985/

I did not find a listing for vinyl top molding clips. The corner piece for these mounts with a counter sunk screw on the top of the molding and the longer piece slides over where that is. The other pieces if I remember correctly have a clip similar to the body upper molding.

If you unbolt the regulator at the crank and at the pivot points you can get it out of the way toward getting the glass out lower the window and unbolt the vent glass to lean it back to add in getting the glass out. Sometimes just lower the window and removing the bottom stop can get you enough access to changing the window felts.

Someone else might have more info for you as well

Hope this helps
Larry

Thanks Larry. I'll see if I figure out how to remove the lower window stop and see if that gets me enough room to pull the felt but I'm still pretty sure I'll have to pull the glass out to remove the lock and door handles (getting ready for paint) As far as the moldings for the vinyl top I'm guessing the holes for the clips have been filled.

I'll see if I can find the spots where the vynil top moldiing used to be mounted ...

Some of the side moldings had the old clips on them still like the ones pictured here. Are the ones for the doors and quarters all supposed to have those little white clips over the studs that the molding snaps onto? It looks like the clip mounting holes on the ends of the door are for these little spring loaded clips ?

Thanks for the help.

Yes the ends use a different clip with a nut on the inside.

Try looking up in the C pillars from the trunk and you may see the holes that are filled for the vinyl top moldings.

As for the vinyl top moulding clips, they were the little white clips with a hole toward one end and you slipped them over the "Nail head studs" in the quarter panel ,and then pushed them forward or back to tighten them in the slot. The moulding then slipped over the plastic clips. When they removed the vinyl top, they probably just ground the original studs ,and there probably aren't any holes visible from the back side.. Someone has a complete set of vinyl top moulding clip set for a Chevelle on EBay for $9. But you would have to fabricate the original studs. We had many vinyl tops installed years ago on cars that did not originally have them, and I believe they installed those same white clips with a small rivet. Larry

Any idea how I can replace the studs for the vinyl top trim? How many were there? I think I found a pictures of the clips you were talking about? Looks like maybe the screws are used where the stud has been removed ??

Thanks Larry(s)

I think they will work fine with screws or the small size pop rivets. Your "442" vinyl top was made like the cutlass "S" coupe and there was no panel between back glass and the trunk. If so, it would require less clips than the Malibu, because their vinyl roof went all the way across under the back window. I think I might have found one of places one of the studs were...thanks for all the help.

I got the door glass on the passenger side out. I had to pull the vent window which was a hell of a task lol I was able to slide the window off the rollers with it rolled alll the way up. I'm definitely not looking forward to getting the vent window back in ...

Did all the post cars have vent windows? I think it looks better without ....

The factory used studs instead of screws because the hole for the screw is a potential water leak and rust point. Get a stud welder and do it right if you care about the car.

Good point, I don't like the idea of the screws...I'd rather just epoxy them on if I was going to half *** it. I'll find someone out here that can weld on the studs...Though it is starting to sound like a good reason for me to buy a new tool ....what kind of tool might that be?

Just a "stud welder" ? I have one for pulling dents....I don't suppose that could work could it?

Thanks Joe

That's exactly what you use. There's a different tip for trim rivets, and of course you need the trim rivets. You can get these from the usual sources (Eastwood, TP Tools, etc).

Awesome! Thank you for the info...I feel a bit of relief knowing I can do this for probably less than 50 bucks.

I still need to order my moldings for the vinyl top that run along the quarter . I'm guessing I can mock them up and mark where my stud line will be?

The vinyl top molding on each side is made up of three parts, a die cast "V" shaped part at the front that lines up with the drip rail molding, a die cast part in the back that wraps over the fender peak and lines up with the stainless piece at the top of the trunklid, and a longer stainless piece that spans the two die cast pieces. Both the die cast pieces have molded studs that are secured with nuts on the back side.

If the car was a vinyl top car originally, the holes for the die cast pieces should be there. This will locate the stainless part so you can weld the studs. Be sure to use body sealer on the die cast parts where they pass through the sheet metal to seal the holes.

Yes it was originally equipped with a vinyl top. I'll look for signs of that stud for the piece that wraps over the peak of the quarter.

Thanks for the tip on using the body sealer...will do.

The trunk lid has a stainless trim across the lid about 1 1/4 inches below the front lip of the lid and you should find the end holes in the corresponding spot. Then there is a metal, imitation vinyl piece the width of the trunk, that is painted the same colour as the vinyl top. Then there is also the cast corner pieces that have one stud that passes through the quarter panel and lines up with the trunk trim.

"Then there is a metal, imitation vinyl piece the width of the trunk, that is painted the same colour as the vinyl top. ". ...I'm not sure which piece you are referring too?

I do have the trim piece that runs along the bottom edge of the trunk...
