Speedometer Woe

Another item with my 71 442. I noticed on two occasions when accelerating wide open, the speedometer needle seems to hang up around 40mph and then jumps to 70. On normal driving it works fine. I have already removed the cable and lubricated the inner cable, which fixed a squeak. Obviously that leaves the speedometer itself. Does this sound like the unit or is it more of a binding cable issue? I do have another speedometer to try, but I thought I would ask for ideas first. Thanks

Hi Brian. I've experienced this before. Its usually the cable or what its lubed with.

Could be the driven gear at tranny is worn or the speedo head. I'd look at the tranny end of it first.

That squared end the of cable needs to be fully inserted. I'm sure you got that covered.
