Harbor Freight 1 ton foldable engine hoist question.

Harbor Freight 1 ton foldable engine hoist question.
Will harbor freight 1 ton foldable engine hoist be able to reach in the 72 Cutlass and pull the 350 out. The intake and heads are off so I'll be pulling the short block only. The tranny doesn't matter if it has to stay in or out. Please help someone has one on craigs list used twice for $75. I'll be using the same crane to install the longblock after rebuild.

Without a model number or picture, it sounds like it should.
A 1-ton unit should have a long enough reach - just be careful, because Harbor Freight's weight specifications tend to be "optimistic." A 650 pound Olds motor should fine for their 2,000 pound-rated unit, but I'd be cautious about trying to lift anything over about 1,500 pounds with it.

I was looking at those on their website a while back. Several reviews mentioned the boom coming up short and recommended the 2 ton version.
That theme seemed to be re-occuring for the 1 ton crane.
This is a great hoist for moving engine around a shop, or loading them into a truck, but not so good for pulling motors out of cars. The boom is just too short. By today's standards, a '93 Mustang isn't a large car, but the boom came 8 inches short of reaching the lift plate bolted to the carb flange of the motor. So unless you have a very small car, like a Miata, get the 2-ton version. Otherwise, the craftsmanship and quality of this hoist are outstanding.

My son gave me his two ton from harbor freight and at it furthest extension its only good for 500 lbs. I could not use it to install my 455 in my 57 olds as I had to use the middle setting to handle the weight then is was to short. If your only going to use it twice rent one that has a long enough boom and can carry the weight at enough extension to stay away from the front bumper.
Just my two cents

I did use their 1 ton foldable on my 72 442, I pulled the engine and transmission together with it,however I had already removed the core support and the fenders which made it very easy to remove. I reinstalled them the same way with no problem and I used the 3/4 setting on the hoist to lift it. My neighbor also used the hoist to remove his 454 engine and tranmission from a Camaro, He did not remove his fenders or core support, I guess the hoist is about the only piece of equipment that I was satisfied wtih from them.

Yes, I just also found another 3 ton crane but the seller didn't specify the brand or model, i might just take me a risk and buy the three ton he says 5 1/2 feet but doesn't say if that's the reach or that's how tall it is.
