Differential/Cowl Markings

I am posting some pictures of the markings found on my differential and cowl. I think that the one on the cowl indicates the inspector but the differential has what looks like a paddle/shovel in yellow the numbers for 408 on it painted in orange. Anyone knows what these numbers mean?

Thanks in advance
Gary

Okay your in luck. My dad worked at plant 2 1968 thru 1992 he worked the lines where A,B and C car differentials were built. 308 would be March of 68 for reference he give me which I did not clue him in on what you had for yours. So with that 4 should be April.

What is your axle ratio?

1970 sounds like we need to archive your dad! Great info.
Gary an educated guess if 70s dad cant help with the yellow would be a line inspection completion dab of yellow that dripped before it dried. May have been confirmation of pinion nut torque as the rear was likely fixtured with the pinion nut "up" Just a guess.
More pix of the 68. Is she a stick car?

Before and after on the seat belts. I did them myself. I had sent them off to Snake Oyl Restoration but I thought the price was a bit too much so I disassembled them, washed them and replaced the hardware. I sewed the stitching with my sewing machine. Saved a lot of money and I am happy with the results.

Please when you do determine the exact axle ratio, let me know!

For reference for all, the paint colors designate axle ratios. Will see how my dads memory is! We are taking his memory back 48 years. I still remember the paint dobbers he had in the over the hump cup holder in his 1976 98.

FYI the work you are doing is coming along very nicely!

The rear on my '68(Lansing car) had the #39 on it. On the drivers side rear frame rail, behind the wheel there are #s stamped on the frame, date code, frame part # and in my cars case the #39. It would seem to be the chassis line sequence # to make sure the right parts got on the right frame.

Thanks. Those seats were custom made by a shop here in town. NO pattern just the old covers used as a guide. It cost me a grand to do the entire job.

The numbers on the gear is 13A40 GM TA 104 so looks like the gear should be a 3.08. It is a non posi unit. Here is a picture of it.

Well my text from my dad when were first talking about the 408 on the cover.
"yellow was for 3.08 axle ratio"

So for 48 years his memory is spot on!

Unhappy

I have found the same yellow marking on 3:23 and 3:42 gear rearends. the # on the housing is the line sequence # that is found on many components on these cars also found on the frame,.fuse box, dash pad and lower dash plastic, metal hanger for brk pedals etc.
