Today's funny car repair story.

My neighbor up the street came over and asked me to drive his car because he claimed his rear axle was making noises and felt like it was binding up occasionally. Said it has been acting funny since he added new fluid.
I slipped a piece of hose into the fill hole to siphon some oil out to check for glitter.

Much to my surprise, the fluid was a neon blue color.

I popped the rear cover off and found a few shreds of a neon blue bottle cap in the gears and floating in the fluid.

I just started laughing. I couldn't help myself. Somehow, he squirted the cap into the fill hole, and ground the blue plastic into dust, thus turning the fluid neon blue.

Did the cap help make it quieter??

If it's a GM, I just heard 2 different companies are making the ring and pinions - 1 makes the rings, another the pinions??
According to the dealers, "some whine is acceptable"!!

There's going to be more whining to follow.
Mainly him whining about the price of differential parts.

The side gears and spider gears aren't going to make it. They've chunks missing from them now.

Yea, there must have been a problem all ready...That little piece of plastic couldn't possibly be a problem.

That reminds me of one of my first olds motors I tore down..it had several oil bottle seals in the pan and most of a full sheet of paper towel..and of course the usual cup full of timing chain plastic crud.

The spider gears are pretty fragile. Once they bind up, they tend to split in half like a piece of dry firewood.
A few of the bearing rollers looked like pigs in a blanket. Wrapped nicely in a rolled up plastic croissant.

Sounds like a good story to submit to Rockauto's repair blunders column in their monthy newsletter. That's my favorite part of the whole issue!
