Cowl/Body Tag Lacation
Where is the cowl/body tag located on a 1956 Oldsmobile 88? I am looking at such a car and the seller has been unable to locate the tag. He has also supplied a VIN56L3662 that comes back as "incorrect" when I search it. All help and suggestions are appreciated. I "may" purchase this vehicle as soon as today.

Well, I don't know for sure if 1956 is the same as 1954 & 1955 but they're both on the passengerside firewall, under the hood and above the heater. Here's a couple photos. John

The VIN on a 56 Oldsmobile will be stamped on a stainless steel tag that was spot welded to the left front door post on the body. It will be clearly visable with the door open .
On the 1956 88 models the VIN will start with 567 then a letter , which designates the assembly plant . And then the sequential number which started with 1001 on the first car assembled at that plant and worked up .
If this tag is missing or is attached with pop rivits or screws I would suggest that you pass on the deal .
Attached is a page from the Olds parts book that explains 1956 VIN codes.

This is the Fisher Body tag . It does not contain the VIN. The VIN tag is on the left door post.

Thanks for the responses; apparently the body/cowl tag is missing. The VIN tag is in place and does appear correct. However, the "missing" body/cowl tag cause me quite a bit of concern. I re-thinking the purchase.

The missing Fisher Body tag is no big deal . As it is not used for registration ID purposes.
