Carroll Shelby's 427 Cobra at Mecum
Carroll Shelby's personal 427 Cobra just sold at Mecum for $5,400,000. That is pretty amazing.
It makes me wonder, is this the Holy Grail of classic cars? If not, what is?
Steve McQueen's Bullitt Mustang sold for $3.4 million, and obviously that was a very desirable car. I am sure that there have been a lot of supercars sell for similar prices, but this Cobra is really special.

Talk about 1%-ers, that’s a .000001%-er purchase. Dropping 5 million+ on a car that will sit 99.9% of the time suggests other over the top purchases: a villa in the south of France, one in Portofino, a Gulfstream G650 in London and a Cessna Citation X+ in Scottsdale, and a few super mega yachts scattered across the Caribbean and the Mediterranean.
I’m quite happy with my ‘holy grail’ 5 figure 4-4-2, but more power to ‘em!

I know that there have been dozens of cars sell for more (Ferraris, Duesenbergs, Mercedes, etc.), but a 427 Cobra is one of the most iconic cars of all time from one of the greatest car builders of all time. And this one was owned by Shelby from day one until his death. I find it hard to think of any other car that would be more desirable than this one. Perhaps if Enzo Ferrari had a personal Ferrari 250 GTO or something like that.

Good point and certainly a great Shelby with his ownership history, so it could be the pinnacle US made holy grail car. A quick Google search shows the top 10 most expensive automobiles ever, a Ferrari 250 is at the top - close to 50 million, that’s insane. An Alfa and a Bugatti and a Mercedes thrown in for good luck, but Ferraris dominate - most all very collectible and desirable, and expensive

Edit: can’t believe I forgot Duesenberg it’s in the top 10 as well - and certainly Indiana is in the USA right, however not really American muscle. It’s a duesy!

Very Kool Car with Significant history for sure.
This Daytona Coupe was the big sale a while back and it resold soon therafter for even more $$$$$$ privately, There have been some significant GT40 sales higher than this amount as well.
MARENGO, IL --The championship-winning 1965 Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe CSX2601 has made history again, selling for a record-breaking $7.25 million at Mecum's inaugural Monterey Auction on August 15, 2009.
That price tag sets the record for the highest price paid for an American car at public auction.
High performance collector car specialists Mecum Auction promoted the Daytona Cobra Coupe - American racing's Crown Jewel - for months leading up to the auction. "Selling this amazing piece of American race history at our first Monterey auction has been the crowning achievement of my career and Mecum Auction's 22 years of selling collector cars," said Dana Mecum, president of Mecum Auction.
"This hand-built car beat the fastest cars in the world and has now added another 'win' to its list of accomplishments. It certainly finished in record form again."
The 1965 Shelby Daytona Cobra was one of six cars built by Carroll Shelby to compete against the dominating Ferrari in the F.I.A. (Federation Internationale de l'Automobile) World Manufacturers Championship for GT race class. An experimental coupe body designed by Peter Brock was built on an existing Cobra chassis, immediately increasing the top speed by 25 mph.
After competing at Daytona, Monza, Spa and Nurburgring, CSX2601 made history when it clinched the 1965 World Manufacturers Championship for the United States and Shelby American on July 4 in Reims, France. Driving the car - and America - to victory was legendary race car driver Bob Bondurant.
Bondurant drove the Daytona Cobra Coupe across the Mecum auction block as it set the new high-bid record.
"Truly the best part about auctioning the Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe has been sharing the stories of its amazing history with millions of people across the country," Mecum said. "This race car's greatest moments and its legacy as America's world champion will be cherished for generations to come."
Mecum's Monterey Auction took place on Saturday, August 15, 2009, at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Resort & Spa on the Del Monte Golf Course. In addition to the Shelby Daytona, Mecum offered an eclectic mix of more than 200 cars ranging from a 1931 Rolls-Royce to a 2007 Saleen S7.
The Mecum Auction Company has been specializing in the sale of collector cars for 22 years, offering more than 5,000 collector cars per year - more than any collector car auction company in the world. Auction information and results are available online at www.Mecum.com or by calling 815.568.8888.

Because it is!!
How many "authentic" Bullet stangs sold as the "No this is the real one..."
Then the true untouched one creeps out of a garage quietly. Untouched. Completely authentic. Right down to a letter from the man himself Steve McQueen asking to buy it himself. Worn out seat. Camera mounts etc. What happens all the other faked cars? You got a 68 tribute stang. Gee how many of those out there. Ouch. Huge burn.

Unless if I read incorrectly Carroll’s Cobra does not have its original engine or transmission. As Carroll got older he installed a 427 with aluminum heads and an automatic transmission. I believe it was Peter Kluth from Legendary Motorcars in Canada that bought the car and restored it back to its original condition. I think that the motor and tranny that were used during the restoration are “Period Correct”.
