Broken motor mount bolts

I knew I needed to replace the passenger side motor mount, however I took a close look at it today and discovered that the bolts that attach it to the block are snapped off at the block.

So the idea I came up with is getting a 90 degree drill and some left hand drill bits and trying to get up in there and drill them out. Hopefully with the left twist bits the bolt would back out while drilling. Well, that part may be wishful thinking, but stranger things have happened, right? There is only about 4.5 to 5 inches of room to work there it seems, so without pulling the motor that seems like my only option.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,

I'd slot them with a small die grinder wheel to accept a flat standard screwdriver.

Then, get the oxy-acetylene on it to get it hot enough to back out.

A propane torch wouldn't get it hot enough I wouldn't think, and the left twist bits just break off in their holes and make everything worse.

My 2 cents.

Ouch... I wish you the best of luck in this job!!
J has some good suggestions and should work if they are not rusted solid!

That is a good idea. Rust isn't an issue, and thanks to a leaky valve cover, the area has been well lubricated.

A dremel with a cutting wheel can make nice slots for ya, too.

That's most likely what I will do. I thought a dremel might be a good idea too, since the stud that's left isn't that large, I need something to cut a small slot that wont cut into the block as well. I got some time before I will be doing this, I'll PB blaster the hell out of them for a while first, then give it a go. Thanks for the input guys.

Small, 3/8 wide chisel, try to get a grip and tap it out until you can grab the part with some pliers.

The bolt is broken at the engine and is flush with the surface. So there is no way to grab onto anything. It needs to be threaded out of the block somehow.

Jacking up that side of the motor, and wedging a couple of 2x4's between the frame and the exhaust manifolds should give you some more room!

If it is that well lubed, maybe you will get lucky that it won't take much effort to get it out...

I sure hope you are right..

I wont be able to get around to it right away, but sometime sooner or later, when this thread is long forgotten, I will resurrect it to provide an update of how it went.

Anybody know where I might find some very small Dremel style cut-off wheels? Was browsing the Home Depot site and I'm not seeing much that can cut metal that is smaller than 1.5". That could make a shallow groove in the stud before cutting into the block also, but I'd prefer to be able to make it deep as possible.

Ah, I spoke too soon I guess, found some 15/16" wheels.

Bolt sizes

Another question, anyone know the bolt sizes for both passenger and driver side?

I assume I can just replace them with some grade 8 hardware...

You should be able to use regular grade 8 hardware of an equal size. I do not know the size tho. Glad you found the wheels.

Yeah, I hope these wheels will be small enough.

I suppose once I get what left of the bolts out I'll take the pieces to a hardware store to find something similar. The drivers side mount is still attached with nothing broken, but I plan on replacing it and the bolts on that side as well while I'm under there.

I'm hoping to do this soon, but may need to wait a little while. Time and money is limited right now, so I am just gathering information and stuff I will need for it at the moment.
