1968 F85 Tribute

I was thinking of doing a F85 Tribute from my numbers matching 442. It will have to be a Club Coupe because I have a Holiday Coupe.

interior -
I will need a column shift steering wheel after I take out my console. The bucket seats will be replaced by a bench seat. I have a blank off for the tic tac tock and will also pull out the radio and install another blank off. The 442 glove box door will need to be changed too. Did the glove box door say F85?

Drive train-
I need to pull the 400ci and put in a 350 with a two barrel. Do I need to change the Trans to make it correct? Also will want to change the rear end gears to something more economical (I have 3:08 now ... any suggestions?). Dual exhaust will be changed to a single.

Exterior-
Remove the 442 grill and replace with a standard 68 grill. Remove the 442 emblems from the sides and back. I need some F85 emblems. Remove the SSII wheels and replace with standard rims. I will need to find some wheel covers. I always liked poverty hub caps if they were correct for this car.

I am sure I forgot something to make this a correct F85 tribute.

I will keep all of the 442 parts just in case I want to make my car a 442 again.

Dave

Yes, but have you ever seen a real 442 made into a F85 Tribute? It would be one of a kind.

And lower its value. Save the 442 and buy an F85. You will regret it once you strip it down.

Huh...? No I haven't! But then, that wouldn't be a tribute! You can't have a tribute of something that never existed......

Guys, I'm thinking (hoping) that he is just pulling chains. My thought is he has seen other threads of "Tribute" cars and much like me, he doesn't understand why anyone would need to do that, or even why putting 442 parts on a Cutlass is a tribute to the 442. This is sort of the anti-tribute.

Yes, I won't let this go too far. It was intended as a reverse tribute and some humor. I love my car just the way it is. On the hand, I do not see too many plain Jane F85's and they may become scarcer than our favorites.

I saw this earlier today and didn't have time to post. I'm considering converting my convertible into a hardtop

Honestly, I think for a guy with time on his hands and a sense of humor, that would be a great project.

Only thing I would add is installation points for hidden cameras, to record the looks on Olds collectors' faces when he told them what he had done and proved it by showing them the numbers - I bet they would be priceless.

After all, it's just a car — what's wrong with turning it into a purpose-built nut-busting machine?

Way too early in the morning for this. Only 4:30 am and already my head hurts....think I'll turn my 442 into a trailer. I only seem to store junk in it anyway.

I can't stand tribute cars. I don't have a problem with resto mod, or upgrades. But don't take a Cutlass and slap on a 442 badge, etc. Nothing wrong with a nice Cutlass and 455 with suspension, wheel, tire, and transmission upgrades.

And the biggest sin of all.....

Putting W-30 stripes on anything but a REAL W-30!

Although that, at least, was a common move, "back in the day."

A completely "poser" move, to be sure, but still very common.

I thought the W36 stripe was available alone. I know you could delete it from the W30 pkg. [1968]

I agree 100%.

Also drives me nuts to see 442 badging on a 70-72 Supreme hardtop.

Come to think of it, I always liked the tail lights on the 68. Also like the sloping roof/fastback look. Might have to get me a 68 442 one day, or a Cutlass, perhaps. Had a chance to buy a gold 68 (notchback?) about twelve years ago with buckets and console. It was beautiful, and the lady only wanted $1800 for it. Still kicking myself for passing,

Oddly, stripes don't bother me. I've considered putting the vertical stripes on my 68 as I usually like the way they look, BUT, I would leave my Cutlass S nameplates on the car. Maybe I'm just weird.

I can't say if you're weird or not. We've never met! If you add stripes, those that don't know any different will look at it and say "Cool car." Those that know better will do a double take, but if you leave it badged as it should be, they'll say those words every Cutlass owner dreads hearing, "It's just a Cutlass" followed by "Looks cool though!"
