ACCEL makes a corrected HEI GM cap and rotor kit that is supposed to put all the EVEN wires on one side and then all the ODD wires on the other to prevent the "tangled up" look.

A friend of mine tried one on LT1 powered Nova, but had some trouble (it "failed" somehow) so he ended up going back to a standard cap.

 

Believe it or not, the plug wires are routed in a certain way to reduce crossfiring and inductive electrical interference. I've seen it addressed in some early 60s Service Guilds and Tech Bulletins.

 

Yes, you don't want the wires for successive cylinders in the firing order to run parallel to each other. 5 and 7 is the pair you need to look out for on an Olds. 8 and 4 to a lesser extent.

 

You can get wire looms from the auto parts store that can eliminate that nasty look. All it takes is a little bit of frequency modulation...
