Upgrading alternator

Upgrading my 1972 olds cutlass alt with a 140 amp chrome right stuff alternator from summit racing. The new alt is a single wire but the one in the car now is not. has anyone done this before? if so any tips? Thanks!

Is the alternator made by East Coast http://ecae.com/
The drag racers like that brand, lots of output and light weight.
Also check Powermaster's web site for help:
http://www.powermastermotorsports.com/tech_help.html

and the yellow bullet electrical section for threads; at the top are sticky threads with wire gauge recommendations vs. amps and length.

HeLPPPPPPPPPP!!!!

Picked up a new alternator and now i cant get it to fit into the existing top mounting bracket. tried prying it back a little, then the bolt would not slide in properly. im looking for a good replacement. Chrome would be great. Anybody know where I can find one. I've searched ebay, summit racing and year one. Thanks

What are your electrical requirements? The cs144 is an excellent unit, but if it can't fit you may try a cs130. It also comes in a 1 wire if needed and will be a direct fit.

Yes,
3 wire is far better then a 1 wire in a street car for charging.

You have to make sure the alternator you're buying has the correct size and clock position to work. I got my 140amp CS130 off a guy on Ebay 2 years ago for ~$140. He custom makes them for your application. Internally regulated obviously, so some wiring modifications are necessary if your current one isn't. You can still see my external regulator on the firewall that I didn't remove yet when this pic was taken.

I measured bolt hole to bolt hole, and gave him the clock position. 3 wire, and fit perfectly.
I have the notorious Taurus 4500cfm electric fan, and @ idle I need the most juice I can get.
Plus I have a couple amplifiers in my trunk for my aftermarket stereo system.

If you have more questions, just PM me. I might miss them.
