Steering Column, 56 olds
In the process of changing from manual to power steering on my 56, I discovered I would also have to change out the column. I got a column from a 56 with p/s, and just happened to check out the center shaft; it seems to have quite a bit of "slop" in it; the bearings may be worn. I haven't taken out my manual column for comparison; it is still hooked up to the steering sector. But in looking at the shop manual, it doesn't look like an easy job to take it apart and get it back together again. Comments and suggestions welcomed.

That is quite an undertaking, I would suggest you send the ps gear box in to get it rebuilt before going to the work of changing. You won't be sorry. Yes, it will cost some bucks but it will be worth it in the long run.

I'm a new member and currently converting my 56 from drum to disc brakes and the power steering is next. Where did you purchase the proper power steering column, and what did it cost. Also who is rebuilding your steering box, and how did you find them. Thanks Michael

Mike, I do not have power steering, I have a 51 super 88 deluxe coupe but I contemplated putting power steering on it until I looked into how much work and money it involved. I was going to send the gear box to LARES, a company who,s name I found in Hemmings motor news. I knew a man who had a 52 parts car with power steering but he has since then sold it.

56 power steering column.
Mike, I bought mine from " Junkyard Jeff " in Dayton Ohio, paid 100 bucks for it. For the rebuild, I will be using either Powersteering Services Inc, www.powersteering.com or pumprebuilder@door.net . I found both on the internet. Be careful on the disc brake conversation, I bought a kit from a guy in Calif and I was not happy with the way it turned out. In my opinion his kit would lead to early spindle bearing failure due to not enough support under the bearing. I finally sent my spindles to "Jamco", not cheap but a really first class job.

Thanks for the heads up. I too, bought the kit from Mike in Cali. and I'm wondering about the longevity! Who is Jamco and if its all right with you I would like to call after Memorial Day. I'm working till Mon. night. Thanks
