67 delmont with red inner fender's?

my name is lester. I recently bought a 67 delmont 88 2-door (holiday coupe). Decent car the brakes where shot. I was working on front brakes (drum) thank god the wheel cylinders wasn't pitted. I had car up on jack stand's and notice some of the under coating coming off inner fender's. This is crazy part they're red. Can someone please enlighten me why this car had them?

Maybe a previous owner was making his own "w-30 Delmont".....would be a cool concept if the theme carried throughout the whole car!

The full-size cars had steel inner fenders.
If they are red, someone painted them that way.

W-30 cars had plastic inners with molded-in color.

Are the inner fenders metal or plastic? If they are metal, it's just paint from a previous owner. If the tire side of the inner fender appears to be plastic, these may be the red plastic liners used on 1967 GTOs that a previous owner installed for kicks. Either way, not factory and not anything special.

They are metal. Car has been painted once. They could've painted them. What gets me is that it is under the undercoating on the car. I figured that the undercoating was factory. It could've been sprayed on when car was painted. But why go through all the trouble to paint the tire side red. No over spray or nothing just to cover it with undercoating. Regardless when i'm done peeling off undercoating they will be painted black. Thanks for info

Back in the day they used something called "red lead" as an underbody spray to try and control rust. It was actually more orange than red. Maybe you are looking at remnant of one of those applications? You can probably google and find out more than I can recall.

Interesting. My '67 442 had what looked like red oxide primer, but harder/shinier, on much of the underside, frame & front suspension. Maybe that's what it was

Color could have varied by manufacturer, assuming that's what it was. Stuff I was familiar with was orangish. And from what I read on Google yesterday most if not all of it actually contained lead. Yikes!

Yes, it was called "Nitro Stan ". A lacquer based putty. Lots of lead. We used to mix it with thinner and spray it as a kind of "filler primer". Was really supposed to be used as a spreadable putty to fill scratches and pinholes that were found after priming.

Thanks for the info. After more scraping it is on more than the inner fenders. I'm almost certain that it is red lead.
