W27 Rear End info
I Just bought a 1964 Cutlass/442 "Clone" and the seller didn't have much information about the car. Its has a 455, a 4 speed, and a W27 rear end.
What year were these W27 rear ends offered?
Is it wider than the rear end that would of come in the car?
What is one of these W27 rear ends worth?
I have seen some posts where folks are looking for one to complete a restoration on a car that had one when it was built.
I guess I am open to selling it since this car doesn't need it like a restored car does, as long as I end up with enough cash to put in one of the Ford 9" bolt in replacement rear ends stuffed with 35 spline axles and a Detroit Locker. I want to take this car 1/8 mile drag racing, and if there is a chance I might hurt this rear end, why bother with it.

Not just a cover
Also, I see you can buy just an aluminum W27 cover, however, this rear end appears to have an all aluminum "center section" area out to where the axle tubes come out of it. I havn't looked for the axle ratio on it yet, I just got the car home today.

I have to go away today for Thanksgiving, so I still won't be able to get under the car! I too am leary that maybe the center section is painted aluminum with a repo cover. Once I get a chance to jack it up and get some pictures on here, I will. I'll get magnet on there to see if that center section is aluminum.
This car is way sweeter than the pictures that were listed showed. Perfect black bucket seat interior with 4 speed console. Dash pad is also spotless.
Nice sounding 455, Billet Specialties wheels, line lock. disc brake upgrade, all sorts of fun stuff. All the dealer new was that the seller told him it was a "built up rear end".
The guy may of been an Olds nut, he has Oldsmobile Hurst Olds Club stickers on the vent windows. Maybe he hoarded one of these rear ends away in the past.

Sorry everybody
Looks like Jensenracing77 nailed it, it must just be some aluminum paint on that center section. I slid under the car (after stuffing myself at Thanksgiving dinner) and put a refrigerator magnet on the center section that looks "aluminum". It sticks right to it, it falls off the cover. Its still neat looking under the car, he even put the little metal tag on one of the cover bolts. It looks just like several pictures of W27's I found on the internet.
If it had been real I would of gladly let it go to one of you guys that need one for a big money restoration, sorry if I got anyones hopes up.
