Rear end noise

hi everyone i have a 1984 hurst-olds ,i have had it for about 4 years .last year i started to notice a noise in the rear end which sounded like heavy truck tires on the back .when i took the car out a few weeks ago it sounded a lot worse after all winter so i took it to a mechanic who told me that the pinion bearing was bad so i had him put in all new bearings including the 2 rear wheel bearings. i picked the car up last night and there is no different in the sound ,i went back to the machanic and we both went for a ride and he heard it as well and he had no idea what it was but said it comming from the rear end .
would any one have any problems like this before
thanks greg

If the mechanic told you that bearings were bad and needed replacement, then replaced them and it still sounded bad and he then said he didn't have any idea you need to get your money back from him and find a different mechanic.

As to a technical explanation or a possible solution, you might PM monzaz. he is pretty good with rear axles.

If the bearing was worn,as originally stated,& there was exccessive play in the pinion. It probably damaged the contact pattern of the teeth.if that is true, then a ring & pinion swap would solve it.
I might also ask what the condition of the axle shafts were, where the bearing rides on them.If they were worn or scored, they should not have been put back in,as there will only be more wear occuring.
It's hard to nail it down without seeing it,but it's a place to start.
