proper driveshaft length

When I bought my '68 442, it had a 350 smogger motor and a turbo 350. I'm getting close to installing the 455 and a short shaft turbo 400. Now I'm wondering if the driveshaft may not be the original either. The shaft has a tube length of approximately 52.5 inches. Does anyone have the correct measurement?

Also, I moved the cross member to the furthest back position... is that correct?

Thanks...

Yes you have to move the xmember to the rear approx. 6 inches. I like to measure the distance and have a driveshaft made for your mod. I separate the yoke, slip it into the trans, push it in all the way, then slide it back 3/4 of an inch. Then measure from the center of the Ujoint hole on the yoke to the center of the Ujoint on the rear end.

The factory service manual probably specifies the length for a 442, which SHOULD match what you are doing, but why not just do the above and get it right for sure? In case the rear end differs or whatnot.

I also recommend using center of u-joint to center of u-joint for the critical measurement. Any driveshaft shop can do you a nice new one easily. Be sure to note how the u-joint attaches at the rear end- c-clips inside the yoke probably. Measure the yoke recess diameter for the UJ caps and the distance from outside edges of c-clips, to ensure you get the correct U-joint and/or shaft aft end.

Google Dennys Driveshaft dot com. Click in the upper left corner that says measurement. All the info you will need.

I had the one made for my 67 after doing the same mod. A heavy duty steel drive shaft, balanced, assembled with new Ujoints, and my T400 yoke if I remember right was under $300.

x2

Then go to a local Fleet Pride and have them modify your driveshaft. It was a little over $100 for mine. I had to install new u-joints myself
