Washer stays on

72 cutlass
When we run the wipers the washer is on and stays on when we didn't press for a washer.
Is this a switch problem or what?

thanks

Pull the cover off the washer pump. There is a ratchet wheel and paw that steps the pump through 10 strokes. They go bad and stick so it never completes it's cycle. Give it a little push to the next step and see if it completes and stops. If you can find a wheel and paw, it should fix it. I don't don't know if you can get those anymore, it's been a long time since I looked.

I was thinking you could clean & grease them.

Heck, it's worth a try. Back in the day you could buy the parts and they were cheap so I just replaced them. But yeah, give it a try and let me know if it works.

That wiper eccentric is made of nylon IIRC. A clean and re-grease sure wouldn't hurt. Did that with mine when I had that problem on my 83 and it worked. I think on these old cars the actions and lube gets sticky from non use.
