Unhappy MayoClinic????? Need advice please

Does anyone know about Mayo Clinic? Anybody been there or know someone who has? Is it a normal clinic, take test and we will call you back and wait months for results or for appointments? Or do they take you in,find a diagnoses within a couple of days? Our son has some kind of medical urgency, seems to us that he has some sort of muscle degeneration. His problems are getting worse and fast. Seen 7 doctors here at home in Canada, they are sending us to a genetic specialist which they said would take from 6 to 9 months to see the specialist. We can't wait that long, by then he won't be able to walk. I heard of people talking about Mayo Clinic, supposed to be good. Any input? Thanks for you help

They're good. Go there. They're not a walk-in clinic, they're just named clinic.

Kyle, My Dad went thru a bunch of problems with Doctors around here in Michigan and he went to Mayo and had much better treatment. At Mayo there are specialists. Yes, if at all possible get your son there.

In Rochester, MN? Quite possibly the best doctors and facilities in the entire world, no BS. Don't believe me, look at the list of presidents, and leaders from other countries that go there.
Kyle, like amywhere else, you have you manage your own treatment and diagnosis to some extent. Stay on top of his condition and monitor progress. They have the capability to test for anything there but you need to be knowledgeable.

Hello Gary, thanks. Yes we are going to Rochester children's clinic. My wife has been pushing hard here to get results from Canadian doctors. She talk with HSC in Winnipeg, we have to see a genetic specialist and would take 6 to 9 months.By then then my son wont walk. No F-IN way I will put up with that. I booked time with the Mayo clinic. I hope to be there in a couple of weeks. My son, you couldn't stop him any time of the day, full of **** and vinegar, now he can barely walk and in constant pain. This isn't right, some days, says he need a wheel chair We have a good health care up here, but for urgency like this, they suck. So I will have to pay down there for this, but it is a fathers duty to take care of his children. No matter at what cost. If I had too, I would even give my heart for my son. We love you Kelvin. May god help us. Thanks to you all for your support

My opinion, get a referral to get him in now, screw the passports, etc, drive there tomorrow. Degenerative muscle and neurological diseases are very long, difficult recoveries.

There was always lots of family support for kids entering the clinic. Check with Mayo, I know you'll want to be near. It's not a big city anyway.
Best wishes for you and your son. They are really good there.

Great, thought a birth certificate was all that's required.
After all, with the exception of the occasional French accent, even Minnesotans speak like Canadians.
You'll love the health care structure once you get to Mayo. It's all patient based and it's the absolute best available.

It might be quicker to apply for Nexus cards instead of passports.

No it won't be. Filling out the application is a 1 hour job but the wait for the Nexus interview is 1-4 months depending on your location.

Best of luck with this difficult situation. Prayers with.

Thanks very much for your support. We have to go to Winnipeg again on Wednesday, we are going to try Homoeopathic Treatment as well. We will go straight to passport Canada and apply. Alot quicker that way. Do this just in case.We will see what we get first, the Mayo Clinic or passports. US customs said we could cross with our son with no passport and my wife's expired passport.. I will call customs on Monday again to confirm this

Our thoughts and prayers are with you, your wife, and especially, your Son. I've heard nothing but good things about the Mayo Clinic, though no first hand knowledge. Good luck and God speed.

Mayo Rochester has the best care you will find for your child.

It's a city of 100,000 people, and it's not difficult to navigate. The downtown area around the clinic can get fairly congested, (at least from my perspective- my town has a population of 18,000) but it's bearable.

Lodging won't be an issue- even if there isn't anything available downtown in the clinic area, there are many nice hotels within 10 minutes of the clinic.

Best wishes for your son.

Thanks for the contact. Just called, have to call Monday morning. Montreal is 30 hours away from us, verses 10 hours to Mayo. But we are open to options. Which ever we can go first, we go. Thanks once again

This year my dad passed away from cancer, brought him for treatments and stayed with him in the hospital till his last days. We had a tough time with that but we got through it.Now this? God is sure testing us this year. We have it tough with parents, but to watch our children suffer? This is a different ballgame. He doesn't deserve this, what has done? My son has a heart of gold and helps anyone he can. If I could take his pain I would.Just shake my head. Not only my son, it pains me to see any child who is hurting. Sorry for ranting on. Thank you very much for your help and support. Means alot to us

Sorry to read of Kelvins health problems. There is good health care in rochester mn . If funds are tight you may want to contact the ronald mcdonald house. They have helped out friends of mine in the past.

wish you a safe trip and a speedy recovery

Mayo is great for diagnoses that are difficult to make- world renown clinic. It can take a while to get in, but in general, patients have better luck getting in than when the doctors refer. My wife says the wait will be shorter than the wait you are talking about in Canada. she also said The Er is a good way to get into the system . Good Luck . Do you have a caring bridge page set up for your son ? How about a donation location sir ? PM if I can be of any further help.

He turned eleven in June. From August, was a normal boy from jumping and running, playing on his hand and knees. To today in constant pain, doesn't run, jump or play. Needs railings to get up or down stairs. Sits down in a chair, gets up like a 80 year old man and walks like a penguin. So their is something terribly wrong. Would like to use the doctors up here, we can't wait 6 to 9 months to see a genetic specialist. I will break the bank and then some fro my child's well being. Thanks for your support
