Oldsmobile Letters

does anyone have any idea if there is a company out there. That a person can buy the oldsmobile letters for the trunk and hood for 65 olds dynamic 88. I have checked usa parts, year one. they dont have them for the big body olds. short of ebay for a used set. I dont know where else to check. unless someone here has a decent set they want to part with. thanks chris

Did you try Kanter and Fusicks?

yes no one carries them anymore. does not sound like they are even made for that year anymore. i guess either fill in the holes before i paint it or watch ebay for a decent set.

Acceptable substitute

If you're in a pinch, the 1964 letters look an awful lot like the 1965 ones, and USA Parts Supply does have those. Part S12.182AK

Just based on browsing pictures on eBay, I think you could mix and match the letters from the two years, and unless you get two different versions of "O" in the same word, noone will know the difference.

Just my two cents.

Thats what I'd say too Mister. Just use the 64 letters unless it's a POINTS getter. I'm betting the normal car show crowd will never notice. And if some one does justsay it's your own CUSTOM touch. You can always change them out if you ever come across a set for a 65.

That makes 4 cents

im not concerned about the points. i just wanted a nice set for on it. i will check with usa parts again, but i thought they told me they did not have any letters left for the 60's versions. i hope im wrong. i dont know if the 64 letters will fit in the exact holes for the pins on a 65, but could always fill them in and redrill for new letters. that could be fun thanks guys i will check into that later today. chris

MISTER, I CHECKED WITH USA PARTS ON THOSE LETTERS WITH THE PART NUMBER YOU GAVE ME. THEY DO NOT HAVE THEM. THEY DO NOT HAVE ANY OF THE BIG BODY LETTERS FOR THE 1960'S CARS. THEY SAID IT WOULD BE AT LEAST A YEAR BEFORE THEY GET ANY. THE TOOL MAKER THAT USE TO MAKE THEM QUIT. HE DID SET ME UP WITH A SET OF 65 LETTERS THAT FIT A CUTLASS. THEY ARE ABOUT 1/4 INCH SHORTER THAN THE ORIGINALS. I WILL HAVE TO REDRILL THE PIN HOLES PROBABLY, BUT THAT WAS THE BEST I COULD DO. THEY SHOULD BE HERE NEXT WEEK. THANKS FOR THE HELP. CHRIS

I have some misc. letters probably from 50s and early 60s. If you post a photo I can try to match something up to it.

run to rund, thanks for the offer. i bought all new sets. they should be in this next week. i wanted all new for my restro job. the ones i originally had are in pretty bad shape. so if i mixed and matched with what you have. mine would still look like crap for my new paint job. so thanks anyway. chris

Well... shoot.

The part number was from their 2005 catalog, so there was always a chance that it had left the market after 3 years. Still, it's rather scary that a set of reproduction parts like that can be so dependent on the whims of one guy (or gal).

FWIW, the 1965 Starfire had the same trunk, but did not have the lettering on the back. So leaving the decals off would not be entirely unprecedented.

I wish you the best of luck with whatever you decide to do.

i got my letters today from usa parts. the trunk letters surprisingly all fit in the same pin holes except the "L". will have to redrill those. i messed up when i prdered. i got two sets of trunk instead of one truck and one hood. the hood ones will have to be redrilled, but should look pretty good when done. the letters are for a 65 cutlass.
