If it were me, I'd have run a tube from the oil-fill tube to the passenger compartment, put a funnel on it, and just dribbled in the oil as I drove. Stopping every 50 miles is A LOT of stopping!

I did that with a '64 Cadillac from Sacramento to Lansing MI
40 miles a qt
after a few stops I could tell the ticking means needs 2 qts, no need to measure.
Every 3rd or 4th stop, swap spark plugs from oily cylinder to not so oily.
Bought about 6 cases of oil at Sears in Colorado.
Almost abandoned the car in North Platte NE, like a dozen other cars out back that made it about that far. Then I figures, well, it still runs... and made it this far.
That was a damn cool car except for that oil burning feature. It literally cost more for oil for the trip than for fuel.
