i took off my intake manifold and the valley pan. i couldnt spin 2 pushrods, the rest i could.
but there was one that spun pretty easily. I could also move it up and down slightly, and laterally.
is this normal? something wrong? its a 455 that i bought recently. dont know if or how well it runs.

If the engine has been sitting awhile some of the lifters have bled down more than others.

yeah it has been sitting a while. once it gets running it will go back to normal?

Should. Hydraulic lifters are standard on the Oldsmobile modern V8s we are usually familiar with. The lifters collapse a little when the engine is turned off and the oil drains down, especially after a long period. Remember also, at any given point in the engine's rotation some valves are going to be more open than others, some fully opened perhaps and some fully closed. This means the lifters and hence the pushrods will have more or less pressure on them. So some pushrods will be very difficult to rotate or move and others will 'rattle" especially in an engine with a lot of miles and especially if it has not been running for a long time. This is normal.

The ones that are tight are on the compression stroke, The other should spin freely but not have play end to end.........Jerr

haha! i know very little about these motors. im sure you're way ahead of me.

On the compression stroke there would be no tension on the lifters as all the valves are closed so they should rotate. The tight ones would be either on intake or exhaust stroke as they are opening the valves.
