394: Sealing the Crossover Pipe Flange / Ring

I'm trying to remount the crossover pipe on my 1962 394. I'm using the Fel-Pro # 60278 gasket that's supposed to be the right gasket for the job, but I've got a huge exhaust leak.

I'd like to ask a couple of questions:

1. What's the torque spec for the nuts on the header studs? I can't seem to find them.

2. Are there any special procedures that are supposed to be used with this type of gasket?

I can't find specific instructions for this type of gasket material, but everything I've read at Fel-Pro says that the gaskets are supposed to work dry, with adequate torque, no sealant required.

It seems that many people like to use a copper RTV on this type of application, but looking at the specs on these types of products, they're only rated for intermittent heat exposure not continuous heat exposure, and the temp ratings don't seem high enough for an exhaust header application.

thanks.

According to the 1961 service manual (you won't find it in the 1962 supplemental service manual) the torque spec for bolting on the exhaust or crossover pipe to the exhaust manifold is 25-35 ft. lbs. Be sure to use anti-seize lube on the bolts.

I recently got rid of my crossover pipe and installed a true dual exhaust system with DynoMax Super Turbo performance mufflers. I also removed the heat-riser valve and replaced the original 1962 driver-side exhaust manifold with one from 1963 which directs the exhaust straight out the back. Works beautifully! More horsepower and saving fuel too!!

Thanks. I used copper anti-seize and brass nuts. I have the 61 manual, but somehow I managed to miss the torque spec. Where was it?

See the Note in the lower left-hand corner of page 233 [Engine 8-3].
