Except ...... there was a big UAW/GM strike early in the 1971 model year which really screwed with production (and could also explain why some cars got parts they weren't supposed to).

Bottom line: if you have some documentation of the build date or delivery date of your 442, and if that date precedes the carb's build date, then the carb was not original to the car. If the carb's build date precede's the car's, then it might be original.

You have a beautiful car!
Mine is a 442 that the previous owner painted as a W-30 (which apparently offends several on the site). He also added the hood & emblems. I bought it because it was a good deal on a real 442 convertible. I have not decided whether to add more W-30 pieces, or turn it back into a regular 442. Just enjoying it and fixing all of the things that the previous "restoration" missed or did wrong.
Anyway, welcome to the site.

dc2x4drvr asked about your mirror being tall. This caught my attention because I had the same issue when I got my car. Previous owner had replaced or added the original passenger side mirror. But it was from a later GM product. It was too tall and had the wrong angle. I was able to locate a correct mirror, and had it painted to match. Not a big deal, but you may have the same situation.
Again, very nice looking car.

Thanks Q, your car as well! I had never noticed that mirror before and went and checked and you are right! It is about an inch taller than the drivers side, I never noticed it before. I will fix that right up. Only this forum would pick that up! So many knowledgeable and picky people on this forum. Awesome.

So to sum up the carb question;

1. My car was built the first week of April, 71 (04A-cowl tag)?

2. The carb was built on 71st day of 71 (March 12)?

So the carb predates the car production date, which is good. But still proves nothing...lol

source: 442.com

ID/ Casting Code Number Year(s) Application/Notes

L 404521 '70-'72 455 4V AT and MT. W-33, 442, SX, 88, 98's. Except W-30. Iron.
P 407568 '71 455 2V AT. Vista Cruiser. No EGR. Iron.
S 407569 '70-?? 455 4V Toro. Low profile. No EGR. Iron
R 407567 '70-'72 455 4V MT except W-30. No EGR. Iron.

Since my car is a 71 442 with an auto transmission, shouldn't my intake be
404521? Sorry if I am completely missing something...
