72 442 vert - broadcast decode
We are in the beginning stages of this resto, and found the broadcast sheet while removing the seats. Looking for some help decoding it. Is there anything on here that would say what color top it should have? The car has been in the owner's family basically since new. He believes the top was replaced at one time, originally black, was changed to white. It would be nice to know what is correct for the car.
Also, does anything on this say if it had any kind of stripes?
Thanks in advance.

This is a broadcast card that was left in the car by Fisher Body Works after the body and interior were finished. The car usually took about 4-5 days at Fisher (where it was born) then shipped to the corresponding Assembly line where it was completed (add: front clip, rolling chassis, final trim etc) on the assembly line.
190 - the sequence the car was scheduled for production on"
03 - March
27 - Day ( of 1972)
34267 - Cutlass Supreme Convertible
970 - Trim code - Black interior
26 - Viking blue lower body
A - White convertible top
A51 - Strato bucket seats (a no charge option on CS)
A31 - electric windows
A46 - electric 4 way power bucket drivers seat
W29 - Base 442 appearance and handling package
Y60 - Accessory group package (lighting)
I cannot read the body number - its too blurred. Does this match your car as it is now?

Ah, forgot to mention the stripes. Yes, the car would have received hood and side stripes. Here's what they would look like. Note: the cutout bumper and dual trumpet exhausts could be installed by a dealer for 350 CID equipped cars but came standard with the W29 L75 455's and W30 X code 455 packages. The hood is also special as it has an Oldsmobile script on the LS above the high beam light. That's because the grill held the 442 emblems where the Olds script usually was located.
Love to see some pics of your restoration. Have you started a thread about it?

Can't confirm the 350 with dual exhausts got the bumper too.

Thanks for the info guys.
No build thread yet, the car was only dropped off on Wednesday and i wasn't up there Thurs. and Fri. Yesterday was the first day i kinda looked it over. It's had some rust repair, body work and a repaint. But still has the original engine, trans, rear, etc. The whole car is there from the owners manual in the glove box to the jack in the trunk.

Nope. The only 72 stock Olds 350's that came from the factory with dual exhaust was the options J code and M code. The J is a 350 2bbl and the M is a 350 4bbl. Both were delivered with down turned duals at the bumper and a stock non cutout bumper. As mentioned previously, the cutout bumper and trumpet exhaust could be added as a dealer installed option on ANY of the Cutlass line-up at extra cost.
Many people add the cutout and dual exhaust to their cars simply because of the cool factor; or personal taste.

Whatever the case may be, factory literature shows the bumper to be available for the "regular" 455 as well.

I agree with you on that. I also have the original hardcopy of that in my dealer ordering guide. 455 - yes. 350 - no.
Here's a picture of a bone stock 72 W29 with 455. At the time of this picture it only had 4500 original miles on it.

Another question about the hood stripes.
When i do a google search for 72 442 hood stripes, I'm noticing that if a metal hood has the vents along the back, it has the stripe down the center. If it doesn't have them, they are the stripes that follow the raised areas on the hood.
Now, the red car pictured above in this thread has the the vents at the back and the stripes that follow the raised areas.
Help straighten me out.

It doesn't have any thing to do with the vents in the back of the hood. There are like five? hoods that could be had on these cars. vents/no vents, louver/no louvers, and of course OAI with scoops part of the W29 features.
I think what you are finding is two different appearance options. I owned a 71 442 with Y79, one center stripe down hood, small stripes along the side.
Take a look at this http://www.442.com/oldsfaq/ofocd.htm

All 455 powered 1972 W29 cars got the cutout rear bumper and trumpets from the factory. Non W29 455 cars did not.
Nice car to start with, by the way. My favorite year and color.

In '72, only non-AC equipped cars got the vents at the rear of the hood. If your car has AC it should not have the rear vents. In '71, all cars had the rear vents. OAI hoods for both years did not have the rear vents regardless of AC. Hope this helps.

The ONLY small block A-body Olds to get a factory-installed cutout bumper was the Rallye 350.

The center stripe was Y73 and could also be ordered with Cutlass and Cutlass S in 71. The 71 442 came with the stripe package as standard equipment on the non OAI hood.
