70 442 Carb Info

Hello All,
I have a stock '70 442 w/ a 455 and A/C . Will a quadrajet from a '79 403 motor work? Any input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
DRXOLDS

Define "work". Will it start and run? Yep. Will it provide the best HP and/or MPG? Not even close.

Thanks, the car had a 650 dead Holley on it. This carb is better. It has been reconditioned from CA Carb shop. But idle is very rough (all new intake gaskets from Mondello with heat block off plates, got rid of the "turkey tray" ) and like you stated HP is just not there and MPG well I never pass a gas station ! But that's OK .
Where would you buy the correct carb from ?
Thanks again!

There's one on Ebay right now. The Ebay one is for a 1970 Cutlass w/455 eng. Not 100% correct for a 442 but close. Item # 180650269667.

when was it reconditioned by the CA carb shop, that place closed its doors years ago from what I know?

Check around, lots of carbs have been for sale lately at reasonable prices your car should have a 7040251 or a 7040257

I will take a look on the bay .....much closer this time. As you stated ....I just checked .........a Pontiac '79 403 had 185 HP ..... Hmmmm '70 has 365 so.....But they both used 750 CFM carbs........
So I have the books and the numbers for correct carb's for the OLDS...
Thanks again for the help !

No matter which manufacturer or model of carb you choose, it has to be set up for YOUR car.

If your car is extremely close to stock, and if you can find a carb builder who will build one to the exact factory specs, then you might get close right out of the box. If your engine is modified even a little, your carb builder needs to know the information so he can build it close to what you need. But you will need to learn a little something about how carbs work and how to tune them. Think of it as an opportunity, not a chore.

I got a carb from carb junkie that is the correct numbered
one for my 70 442 with 455 non A/C. They do have cores
for most all 442s. I've had no problems and runs great.
You might want to give them a call, they will gladly set
it up any way you want.

Your 79 403 carb is a very good core to start with IF you tune it to your car. The only thing the 7040257 carb will do is make it numbers matching. You will still have to tune it to your car.
Buy this book:
http://www.amazon.com/Rebuild-Modify...0657342&sr=8-1
Call this guy for parts:
http://www.cliffshighperformance.com/
Then the carb you have will likely outperform the 7040257. If numbers matching is your goal, you could still buy the other carb and tune it as well.

My motor came with a Holley spreadbore 650 that was Holley's replacement carb for the Q-Jet. It's a 6497. It cost me $25 for a rebuilt kit & the only thing that doesn't work is the choke & that's bacause I'm running an Edlebrock Performer without the hot air coil. It probably performs as well as the stock Q-Jet. If that happens to be the carb you have it was specifically made for a 70 Olds motor

It's worth noting that that Holley 650 spreadbore (list 6497) is a double-pumper with mechanical secondaries. As such, I wouldn't recommend it for a heavy car and/or one with highway gears. But give it some race gears and/or a high-stall converter and you can have a lot of fun.

A/C doesn't play into what carb goes on the engine, just stick or auto.

(at least in 1970)
