1966 442??? Not sure
Newbie here. Not an Olds expert, but always loved the 66 and 67 Cutlass. Ive owned a 66 Holiday and a 66 Cutlass convertible in the past. Today, I looked at a 66 442 sport coupe for sale locally. It's been sitting for a long time and looks as though it may have been raced in the past (it has a Sun Tach, B&M shifter, and a driveline loop. Anyway, the car is very solid. Theres some rust on the front fenders and a bit below the windsheild, otherwise quite solid. It has all the 442 badges and the spear-like moldings on the fenders, but I have no idea on how to tell if its a real 442. The color code is N6 and the interior code is 995 which is a red bench seat (?) seems odd. it has later model bucket seats in it now. It has a floor shift steering column and no PRNDL indicator on the dash. possibly a 4 speed, bench seat car? Its a California built car and has NO codes on the trim tag. It has a 12 bolt rear with a sway bar. It has an engine, but it looks to be gold colored...most likely a 330? It has a Carter AFB and the intake is dated 117-4...64? or 74? How do I check to see if the block is correct or not. Most likely its not. Also, the asking price is 2500.-- but negotiable. Good deal?? Thanks in advance

It can't be a Sports Coupe with that side trim. It's either a Club Coupe or a F-85 Deluxe Holiday Hardtop with that trim. If you can get the model # from the trim tag,we can tell for sure. I think I can see a post on the passenger side and that would make it a Club Coupe.

Looks like a cutlass molding on deck lid. The kid who had my '66 442 sold the 442 molding for dope money, so that happens. A better look would tell the story.

No I didn't say that it wasn't a 442. The 442 package was available on any 2 door Cutlass or F-85 model in 66. If that car is a hardtop with that trim,it's a F-85 Deluxe Holiday Hardtop and very well could be a 442. Beings it's a Fremont car, check to see if there is 2 fuel lines or 1. The 442's had a return line and the others did not.

It has the word OLDSMOBILE with the letters close together. The black part has faded. I think its a 442 molding as ther same Ive seen on pictures. It looks like the cutlass molding have the letter spread farther apart and not black...right?

He said it was a Fremont built car and the trim tag will not have any codes that will tell what it is or isn't as far as being a 442.

Take a pic of the front and rear too. If it turns out to be a real 442, $2500 or less
doesn't sound like a bad deal. I have a dash pad that is in fair condition and there are
fellows here with parts for it too. Good luck!

That's right - The Cutlass/F-85 Deluxe molding has tiles, the 442 has a pebbled backround appearance originally black, 66 and 67 are different. You will see the Cutlass molding partially painted surrounding the tiles, perhaps to mitigate pitting trouble. I bought a rough parts car to get the first 442 molding I needed for my car, which as I mentioned was missing. Now the parts car doesn't seem so rough so I want to make a fun drag car out of it. Good Luck

Heres a few more pics I took today. I can t get to the back of the car as it's up against a hill. It looks like it was a manual transmission car, but converted to automatic. The brake pedal is an auto, but there's a bit of a clutch pedal that was sawed off not shown. I think the car is an F85 442, 4 speed, bench seat car. But the engine looks to be a 330 (?)

That is an odd head stamping, but prefix of W on the head stamping and a big 3 on the casting would, I believe, indicate the 330 V8 in 66 or 67. Being a car that is a 66, I would figure that is a 66 330 in there. My money is on a 66 Cutlass that had some 442 bling put on it back in the day, and got rode hard. I would pass on this car and spend your money on a restorable 442 with original powertrain. You are going to be spending the money anyway, might as well spend more up front and less overall and end up with something better. If you can prove it's a 442 body and it speaks to you, go for it, but right now, it looks like a Cutlass from here.

was there a performance 330 with a 12 bolt rear and sway bar? If so, the car is kinda cool being a 4-speed and all. But, yes, I know what you mean, it's been beat to hell. I'll most likely pass on it. Thanks

Real 442 front fenders - CHING
Usable rear bumper core - CHING
442 Tail lights - CHING
Wheel opening moldings - CHING
442 Deck Lid Molding if any good at all - CHING CHING
12-Bolt diff Olds or Brand-X - CHING
Nice looking wing vents - CHING
Odds and ends....
If it's a real toilet, consider offering low and stockpile some parts you might need for a better car which may turn up. If it wasn't too far away from me I would.
Good Luck

Thanks for all the great replies. The car is in WA. The floors and trunk are very good. I forgot the trim tag picture, but it's a 33617 body. which means a F-85? I do think its a real 442, but without the original engine of paperwork, there's no way to prove it. I think I'd rather have it be a 330 4-speed with the original engine, than a 442 without

Yes, it definitely has a fuel vapor return line. I'm going back to take another look tomorrow. I'll snap a picture of the trim tag. It looks like the front fenders and hood were changed at one time. there's blue paint under old maroon paint so it may have been done a long time ago and they never removed the hood molding. It also has a Cutlass grill molding. But from the cowl back it seems to be all 442. The door panels have the wood grain top area (?)
Buy It. and put a 455 in her.

All 66 F-85 Deluxe Holiday Hardtops were bench seat,no buckets in a F-85.

in the state of WA, where this car is, they will issue you a title after 3 years, but in the meantime, you get a plate and registration so you can drive it as normal. you can sell it to someone else in the state, but they have to wait the remainder of the 3 years. you can sell it out of state, but theyre on their own...I think its best I pass though..Thanks
