I did my college thesis on this topic.
I actually turned a 'tree hugging hippie' (my professor)
into a believer in preservation over removing these cars.
When you factor in, the energy that goes into removing, scrapping,
shipping, refining, building an polluting... turning old cars into
new ones doesn't actually make much sense. It would actually
be more environmentally sound to retro-fit cars with better engines
and not trade up every 3 years.
What really bothered me about this whole thing was the EPA.
(and believe me, I read tomes on this subject!)
This is supposed to be our government representative in the quest
for a cleaner, longer lasting environment.
These people have almost ZERO genuine interest in the subject.
They are there to appease big industry and keep their coffers full.
It doesn't take a Rocket Scientist(sorry Olds guys!) to realize junking a
non running vehicle doesn't equal 1 ounce of Big Business pollution.
