and also what about the backspacing

 

The wheels are 14 x 7 with a bolt circle or 4 and 3/4 inch diameter. I am not sure of the backspacing, someone on here should chime in that knows.

 

15x7 would be a better choice, given the tire sizes available today. Wheel OFFSET should be as close to zero as possible. On a 7" wide wheel, that would be about 3.75" backspacing. On an 8" wide wheel you want about 4.25" backspacing.

 

would 3 1/4 back spacing on 15x 7" wheels on my 1968 cutlass work? i am looking to put 255/60/15 BFGs.

I see the #4 post says "about 3.75" backspacing".
Too vague of a statement.
So for clarity: would 3.25" backspacing with 255/60 or 245/60 work without rubbing? I have 15x8 Torque Thrust Ds with 4.5" backspacing currently. Not liking the look.

Zero offset puts the wheel mounting flange right in the center of the rim width. That would be 3.5" for a 7" wheel. Since backspace is measured from the outer lip of the wheel, not the bead mounting surface, there's usually about an extra quarter of an inch added, which is how zero offset on a 7" wheel gets you 3.75" backspacing. I said "ABOUT" 3.75" because different wheels have different lip dimensions, so backspacing for the same zero offset could be up to 4". It can't be less than 3.5". At 3.25" backspacing, the offset will be close to 1/2".
