Well, after 3 attempts by AG Rebuilders for a rebuild on the water pump from the 1963 Olds 394 engine in my 1957 Olds it is finally fixed. For those who are not aware, I sent my water pump into AG Rebuilders several months ago to be rebuilt. When they sent it back I bolted it to the engine and it leaked. I finally figured out that there was a crack between an alignment dowel and a bolt hole. I had not seen this crack before. I sent it back to AG Rebuilders and they welded up the crack, charged me again for the service, and sent back the water pump. This time I checked the pump with a straight edge and it was clear they had sanded way to much material away on one side of the pump housing. You could see light even when it was bolted to the timing cover. (I believe this is what caused the first crack when I bolted the water pump down but I did not check so can't confirm). I sent it back again and they made sure to get the surface level.

When it returned the 3rd time I checked it and it did appear to be straight. The housing seemed much thinner than before. I bolted it too my engine and then realized the next problem....they had shaved so much of the surface that my water pump pulley did not align with the crank or alternator pulley. This required me to shim the water pump pulley out to get it back even.

So, after over $500, I finally have a rebuilt water pump. If I could go back in time I would have just bought a rebuilt one from ebay and saved myself 3 months of headaches dealing with this.

That's ridiculous. It's almost as if they fixed it with the intention of making it unusable. Seems spiteful almost.

I'm doing some research on sourcing pump bearings seals impeller and what not. I'm having a hard time understanding why there is so much mystery behind the exorbitant price charged to rebuild pumps while others cost half as much to rebuild. It's not scarcity because I have one pump and I need that one pump rebuilt. It's not about labor because the time is the same. Can't be parts cause the same parts are being used. And what is the obsession with the "AC" pump?
