Kickdown Cable...
Kickdown Cable...
I'm having trouble finding clear instructions on how to hook up the downshift/kickdown cable between my carb and th350. The cable wasn't hooked up when I got the car (1977 442). The funny part about it is that there is like 2ft of cable sticking out from the plastic sheath such that it could almost get tangled in the fan...
Does that sound normal?? A step by step procedure for adjusting the kickdown cable would be greatly appreciated.
Just out of curiosity, I read that the downshift mechanism on earlier models goes directly to the accelerator while on later models like my 77 the cable goes to the carb. Why the change?

Do you have a picture of the mounting bracket? It's a Chevrolet setup and there are a few videos on the net on how to setup and adjust it if you have all the parts.
You need a carb stud like this and the brackets for attaching the cable:

You need a carb stud like this and the brackets for attaching the cable:

You need to buy the little stud and install it sometime. The cable has a tab you pull up right behind the bracket, this releases the tension. Then with the throttle opened all the way, push the tab back down and your done.
So with throttle closed I keep the cable taught and tighten the stud such that it is at the end of the oval shaped clip thing. Next I pull up the plastic tab, open the throttle the whole way, and close the tab. Is that correct?
The help has been greatly appreciated, thanks

That stud (screw and nut setup currently on there) is basically a guide and a stop. If it's tight and not binding the cable it will work ok. So leave it alone and adjust the cable with the throttle opened all the way.
