Advice on Exhaust

I have a 1968 350 Rocket Engine. I have capped where the cross over pipe connects the the passenger side exhaust manifold. I want to go dual exhaust obviously and with 2 1/2 inch diameter pipes. I am very interested with the stainless system PYPES sells but they do not sell down pipes from the manifolds only connectors for headers. This system has an X-pipe in it and a choice of Street Pro or Race Pro mufflers. Does anyone have any experience with this system or any others I may be interested in. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Todd

Not to derail your plan but have you visited your local exhaust shop? I have always found a custom built exhaust system usually fits way better than those out of the box kits and the locals are usually pretty competitive with those kits and you get a guarantee. I shopped around on my last dual kit I had made and found that the price varied by about $100 from one to another and you can't tell any difference in the finished product. Just a suggestion.

I have thought of that but cant seem to find a local that has stainless plus they do not have the X-pipe which really helps in balancing the exhaust. I found a place that did a nice job on a dual set I looked at and it was welded from front to back. Looks good but what if you need to change a section? Any thoughts?

If you just have to have an "X" pipe, order one from Summit or Jegs. Hand carry it to a muffler shop and tell them what your trying to do. Some shops can fab one for you. I prefer the standard exhaust pipe and welded throughout. I hate rattles and I don't build Barrett Jackson style cars for the street. If you need to change something you just cut and refab. If you are planning on headers, now would be the time to do it.

Why stainless for the exhaust?? I can't think of a reason why you would need it other than living in the rust belt and driving year round.

I spent a lot of time removing rust from all kinds of surfaces so I just did not want to see a surface rusted exhaust. Also the Pypes ss was priced similar to others aluminized steel which in CT rusts pretty quickly as we have many humid days.

I plan on this car being a daily driver which is crazy I know seeing as I am doing an off frame restoration but to many of my friends and family have been dropping like flies lately so I figure enjoy it while I'm still here. Rust and the look is why I wanted to go stainless. I figure stainless will last for many many years with out having to screw with the exhaust. Thanks for all your responses and input guys....Todd

I've had a different exhaust on all of my cutlasses and below is some video of each to hopefully help you get an idea. I currently have 3" Pypes with headers on my 72 now and love them.

Just remember, stainless, not stainproof.

Um, I have a set of Pypes downpipes for stock manifolds. Their online catalog does not do a good job of describing them, but I think this is what you want:

http://www.lmperformance.com/67241/.html

Note that while they are described as 2.5", the ones I got have the manifold ends necked down to mate with the stock flanges. Also, note that while these are listed for a 442 (big block), all A-body Olds manifolds have the output flanges in the same place.

Hey Joe so even though the down pipes are listed only for Olds big blocks these down pipes will fit my 350 small block engine is that correct? So once bolted onto the manifilds where these downpipes end is where the X-pipe they sell will bolt on and then the mufflers and tail pipes. Is that correct? If so I think this is the system I want to go with. Please let me know if this is correct about the down pipes. Thank you.....Todd

You can buy natural stainless downpipes for a 350 Olds from Summit Racing. $120
