Timing mark jumping around

I was trying to set the timing on my 307 in my 84 regency. I jumpered the Aldl and when I put the light on it the timing mark jumps around between 16 and 20 degrees before tdc
its idling rough and lacking power so that’s why I decided to check the timing

does this indicate my timing set is getting worn out?

Did you have the vac advance unhooked, and plugged? What was your RPM when timing?

If it is a high miler, check the timing chain for stretch and for a chipped/broken nylon tooth cam gear.

Good luck!!!

there’s no tach but id guess it was around 700-800 rpm but it’s idling rough

Good luck!!!
it’s got 110,000 on the od
but I guess it would probably be best to change the timing set anyways bc I’m sure it’s still got the nylon gears in there

Does the emission label say to jumper the ALDL to set timing? It's been a long time but I recall some vehicles required disconnecting the four wire connector at the distributor vs. jumping the ALDL. Someone that knows for certain please jump in to confirm.
