Exclamation Carb Backfire

Hi, I have a 72 Cutlass, 350 engine with a Holley carb. It has been sitting for a while and when I try to start it, it backfires real bad out of the carb and doesn't start. The fuel pump is shot so I've been putting the fuel in the carb myself. Any ideas on how to get the thing started?? Thanks in advance!

Arrrrghh!

It's backfiring because you're pouring gas into it!

Put in a fuel pump and see what happens.

Yea, kinda figured that didn't help. I thought it would at least get it started, at least just for a second. Picking up the fuel pump tomorrow, I'll let ya know how it goes.

Did the fuel pump fix it? Probably not. I had the exact same issue last week, except it didn't pop through the carb when I poured gas down it, but it did run. I suspect you have a spark issue, because you don't have a gas issue as described about.

My fuel pump was fine the float in the carb was stuck. I pulled out my FORD tool and tapped the carb gently and suddenly the fuel pump started working and the car started and continued to run.

Get a timing light and check your timing. Timing sets on Olds motors are a known weak link. It could be telling you it's time to replace yours.
