Greetings to all ye Oldsmobilers! I have a slight issue with the driver's side door hinge on my 72 Cutlass Supreme. (See pic below). The door opens and closes with no issues and it doesn't sag, but I don't want it to become a bigger problem. Can it be fixed without removing the door?

 

 

You are definitely missing the bushing in the upper hinge. I would also look at the lower hinge, I am sure the bushing is badly worn and needs replacement.

 

Keep in mind that door hinge replacement can spiral into having to remove the front fender. If the alignment isn't right on the body side hinge mounts the only way to adjust with the door on is to remove the fender.

Also, I'd recommend putting some tape on the door / fender edges and bottom of door to try to prevent paint chips. Try to wrap the tape around the front and back side of the metal.

 

Dave, you can buy a door hinge repair kit for less than $10.00 and do the pin/bushing replacement yourself. Otherwise the whole assembly costs around 75.00
As noted, you can support the door and remove the hinge. The fix takes a bit of trial and error, and you'd be best to have a friend help with the process.

 

That's actually not the pin bushing, it's the roller and is normally not serviced. You need to replace the hinge. I have been able to repair these in the past but it takes a little ingenuity.

 

get a good used hinge and rebuild it then swap it in, the repop hinges require repop parts to repair the GM hinges can be repaired w GM parts

 

Thanks for all the input everybody. Why can't I just pry back on the part that rides on the collar and drop in a new bushing?

 

You can do what ever it takes, but it is not a bushing. It's a roller and it is pressed/staked on to that pin. That is not the pin that the bushings go bad in. Look at the passengers side (it is probably ok) and you will see what it does. The last upper I rebuilt with a bad roller I did what Retro Ranger suggested and got lucky and found a used hinge w/a good roller and replaced the pins and bushings. They sell a spring compressor (cheap) which I recommend for removing/installing the spring. I have replaced/retro fit new rollers on the hinge before, but it has been so long ago I can't give you any details.
