I have a '73 Custom Cruiser, and I don't think any other years fit your car, but if any do, it would most likely be a '75. Oldsmobile tended to change things slightly each year during that era. A rear bumper off of a '76 98 would not fit, and I don't think one from a Delta 88 would fit, either. The rear bumpers were unique to the wagons. You'll most likely need to find another '76 Custom Cruiser with a good bumper and take that one off of it.

Hey guys,

I had mentioned to Tom that I thought the rear bumper from a '74 Ninety Eight might be the same since the back of the '76 Custom Cruiser looks to me like that of the '74 Ninety Eight...anybody else know if this right?

Sorry, but not even close. The 98's bumper has a "bump up" in the middle to accommodate the license plate, which is also recessed into the bumper. See the photo below.

The rear bumper of a '76 Custom Cruiser is more flat all the way across with only a slight recess for the license plate:

It's like I said, these cars look similar from 100 feet away, but up close you can see all kinds of small tweaks in the body lines and bumper design from one year to the next.

Yeah you're right they are different. Does that mean the '74 98 bumper would not work on the '76 Cruiser? The wagons are pretty hard to come by, especially in good shape so any options for wagon owners are always helpful. If there are only subtle differences in the bumpers, could it still be used?

Tom, just how bad is your bumper anyway? Is it something that can be filled and rechromed?

The '75 Olds parts catalog shows that the '74 and '75 BQ-BR/Custom Cruiser rear bumpers are the same.
The '76 rear bumper looks the same to me but I'm no expert.
You would have to check a later parts catalog or Hollanders to find out for sure.

You would have to get underneath and look at the mounting hardware, alignment and type of brackets, etc. I would be surprised if they were the same.

Excellent hookup. Good to see good parts go to good homes.

I used to see them on the side of the road, around here, as they were notorious for rusting off from the Blizzard of '79!!
Glad you found one!
