71 or 72 core support

I have two, but both are seriously chewed up under the battery area. Everything currently advertised on our favorite auction site is about the same, or mostly deteriorated on the top plate.
Anyone have one laying around? Would need to be shipped to Plano, TX. Prefer Greyhound if you can do it.
Thanks!

Question 71 or 72 core support

They are slightly different from each other. Which one do you need?

Either one. I'll most likely use 71 grilles, but I also have 72 ones. So whichever is in the best shape.

i have a pretty good one , very little rot on the bottom side.
i would be willing to weld a small patch in the bottom.
it is really solid on top. the bottom is just pushing out a little
i restore them for a living, so my description should be quite precise.
anyhow if i can help call or email me.

1971 Cutlass core support

I have a very nice core support from a 1971 Vista Cruiser. Never shipped
on the bus before but heard it works out ok. If you don't work out a deal let me know.

The 72 support has a bump to clear the grills, so you could use a 72 for 71 but not vice versa.

Core Support

I appreciate the help, but now I am confused. I looked at my core support and another 72 core support and they both raise up to clear the grills starting on the outside edge from the lower level just above the headlights so I don't see where they are different. Thank you for clearing up the differences. Trent in Los Angeles.

The 71 support is flat immediately above the grille. The 72 has a raised bump above the outer corner of each grille because the 72 grille wraps in towards the radiator.

I bought a '71 parts car, but the core support has the '72 humps. Makes me wonder if late-year models went ahead and used the '72 core.

71 - 72 Core support

Hello: I thought I would send a photo of my 1971 Vista and the core support near the grill. I have two 1971 Vista that look the same. I wanted to clear up this issue. I think the 1970 core support will be flat on top of the grills. This photo shows what is clear to me a 71 Vista grill with a raised area to clear the grill. Keep in mind Cutlass and 442's have a different style grill for 1971, but should have the same shape. The hoods for 71 & 72 are the same and are raised in the grill area with trim only above the grill. The 1970 hood is straight in this area and a piece of trim the length of the hood and down the "tooth". Regards. Trent in Los Angeles.

Yeah, that's a 71.

Here's a 71 - note that it's actually a '72, hence the grilles and headlight surrounds:

And a '72:

The 72 has that extra hump at the outside edge of the grille. On both, the area above the headlights is lower than the area above the grille.

'70 is still more different, and in more drastic ways. Headlight buckets, hood latch location, the entire shape of the top plate, and maybe some more.

core support

Great photos, thank you. So did the car in the 71 photo come from the factory that way, or was a spare 71 part used to restore the 72? Regards

I suspect that was an incorrect swap. The grilles clearly hit the core and will rub.

If you are going to toss your old one I would like to come get it. I can use some pieces off the RH side to help rebuild my LH side.

1971 1972 Core Support

Thank you again for the photos. It does look like the grill on the 1972 touches the core and will likely damage the grill over time. It is great that GM made the changes each year for style in the old days. While using the same bumper and hood, they had to make new grills and a whole core support press to make the 1972 core support. They did this during the same time as UAW was striking closing plants and slowing production. Now with cheaper overseas competition with cars, they can't afford to make those changes and great styles every year. Regards. Trent in Los Angeles.

I posted the same ad you are posting about 2 months ago and didn't have much luck. They are hard to come by since they all rust in the same spot. How bad is your? Mine is pretty much gone on the driver side.
