425 olds

looking for a 425, in no paticular great of shape, but must be unblown up, with as little rust as possible, and complete rod set. must have the more popular lifter bank angle, with .921" lifter bores, not the odd ball bank angle, with popular style lifters. also perferably as low of and "F" code as possible, such as, "F1" or "F0" would be nice. im located in lindsay ontario, but am willing to drive pretty far for pickup.

The engine you are looking for will only be found in the 66 or 67 Toronado as you want the large lifter engine and 39 deg. cam angle.

68Delta88 We've talked before but I don't remember where your located. I've got some 425's but shipping an engine very far may cost more than the purchase price! I'm in Medford Oregon, SW part of the state 30 miles from the California border. I'm thinking I read that a 425 crank will fit in a 455 block. If that's true and you could come up with a 455 block local you could add the 425 steel crank, rods and pistons in a rebuild. Can anyone verify the 425 crank in a 455 block? John

actually, i prefer the 425 block. i was going to swap in a 455 crank, and make use of the 425 rods, with an oversize 455 pontiac piston. that way i get flat tops with a longer rod/stroke ratio. i then have a full set off .921" roller lifters, and have the tools to retrofit them to the block, after converting them to solid. i wanted the 425 crank for a 350 diesel stroker that ive been planning for awhile. however, im almost thinking of scrounging up a good 455, and just getting a hold of some 425 rods, and then just running a solid flat tappet. not sure yet, but anything you can find let me know.

OK, here's how clueless I am. I'm not even sure how far East Ontario is! Are you near the Great Lakes? Have you posted a parts wanted ad on realoldspower.com yet? I know there's a whole mess of Oldsmobile guys just a stones throw from Lansing Mich. and some of them have to have extra 425's laying around. I have three in the garage now and am still trying to work a deal to purchase six Toronados, three 1966, one 1967 and two in the 1970's. Must be a package deal and I'm trying to make room behind the garage where the neighbors won't see them! But yeah, the shipping would kill any deal we might make.

P.S. put on your Rino skin before spending time on ROP, some of the guys can be downright rude!

425 Cad and 425 Olds were totally different engines.

If it was an Olds, it was a 307.

I'm new to forum's so please bear with me while I learn. I have considered putting the olds 7" rods / 455 crank / pontiac pistons in a 425 block - as you have mentioned. Have you trial fitted this combination? I have some questions. Is the bottom of the bore in the 425 block notched for rod clearance like the 455 block? Do the big-ends of the rods clear the camshaft (the bolt heads of the 455 rods are much closer to the parting line - I assume to prevent interference with camshaft)? The long rod with the long stroke will move the beam of the rod closer to the cylinder wall at maximum rod angle - do they clear? Any information you have regarding this combination would be appreciated. Thanks. Mike

Yes...this is my 469 frommy '70.
455 Block (4.185Bore)
425 Crank (4.254Stroke)
7.1" BBC rods
It's fun!!!! Revs pretty quick. Makes obscene power.

I have considered putting the olds 7" rods / 455 crank / pontiac pistons in a 425 block
Never really heard of doing this combo...
your starting off with the less common/odd ball block & weaker crank.

This is true. My 455 block started it's life as a '65 or '66 425 block, whoever rebuilt it threw in 455 rods, pistons, crank, flexplate, and it has B cast heads. I find it somewhat curious that with the existing performance mods my engine has, that they chose to go with 425 heads instead of a set of 455 C heads or the aftermarket edelbrocks...perhaps they simply couldn't find anything better...Olds big block parts are hard to come by in this region.

425 and 455 are the same block. The reciprocating assemblies are fully interchangeable.

Pin placement in the Pontiac piston is slightly different, but it doesn't seem to be a problem with "street" engines.

Here is an example.

The only one I've been involved with, used 425 rods and 4.125" Arias pistons.

No reason to. There is not much difference in flow, between A, B, and C heads.

?
Assuming they all have the small valves...
A 2.07 valve C head will outflow an A head, or
a B head for that matter.
Someone correct me if I'm losing my mind.

This sounds like a job for the flow bench.
Too bad I don't have any of those heads, or the aforementioned bench.

It was posted, and discussed, on ROP, several years ago.

He has a good reason for using that particular block & that "weaker" crank is a non issue.

All valve sizes used for baseline flows on intakes were 2.071", except on the "J" head which had a 2.00" intake. All exhaust valves were 1.625". All flow tests were conducted at 28" of water.
This is from the head comparison you provided...
It's a bit misleading 88Coupe.

Only some '66 B & '67 C heads came with 2.07 valves.(Toro motors)
So...saying all A,B & C heads flow the same is false.

All A,B & C heads that were modified with(or came with) 2.07 valves flow the same would be a lot less misleading.

Sorry to beat this point to death, but if you find a set of A's They won't flow the same as Toro C's...
